How big will the map be?

I were just thinking about how big will the map be when the game is fully developed if anyone knows that yet
Or what can the map be compared with

The map will be around 3 square miles or 9 square kilometers. They said it is larger than Red dead redemption’s map. Warhorse has mentioned that they will add more to the map with later acts hope this helps

Yep they did say that first act will be around 9 square kilometers. Then they said that they will make it even larger as their graphic department is doing OK.

As far I know, he was comparing the game to RDR in terms of DENSITY not size though. Meaning that the world will be natural looking and not so compressed as most other open world games. Just saying cause I think this was missunderstood by community…

It has been said in one thread about map size and I even quoted it in another thread about map size, so i’ll do it again for those here who haven’t read it and are still somehow concerned about map size.

People were complaining, that our map is too small (approx. 9km2) and that Oblivion is much larger (41km2). So I did a little test… I run from the northernmost part of the map (Cloud ruler temple) to Bravil. It took me 7 minutes on foot. Even if I run 20km/h, thats 2,5 km. So there is no chance that Oblivion has 41 square km of playable area. It could be 15km2. At most. In our game, it takes 7 minutes to run from the city to stables from our live stream (approx 1.5km). The whole map would take approx 20 min. So lets repeat the same thing I said before - our map is about the same size as Oblivion

Our designers did a test and tried to run for 7 minutes in other RPGs. Initially I thought, that some games are much bigger than they actually are. Of course that speed is the most important factor here and its not the best accurate measurement, but Skyrim, Oblivon, Fallout 3 and New Vegas all have map very similar or even smaller than us. I wonder how would RDR do in this test, but I am too lazy to search for the disc We dont want to enter any “whos the biggest” competition, but since some people thought that 9km2 is a disadvantage, its worth saying, that it isnt. Other games are about same and just have misleading info about the size.

But this informations are allready old. As GingerFOX said, the map now is bigger, around 12 square kilometers, not only 9 anymore. They added the village of Úžice with some countryside in the east of the map. On the Alpha-Livestream you can see the current map during 22:16.
I read about the size of 12km² in an interview, I don´t know anymore where exactly, but in comparison to the map it would fit. And I really like that the map is bigger now.

So as we can see the scale of the map already changes during the development of Act I, so it is difficult to say how big the whole map of all three Acts will be together.

I did manage to find this on the Kick starter page, you and @SirWarriant are both correct .

Map size

Some people are concerned about our maps size and seem to think that 9 sq. km. is not enough. Please trust us that it is. Our map is bigger than the one in Read Dead Redemption. The population/point-of-interest density is going to be on par with RDR. We want the world to look natural.
