Inspiring Art Late Middle Ages

The art work below is by Pieter Bruegel the Elder he was born 122 years after the events of the storyline in KCD, but time/technology moved forward much more slowly back then so things were still very much the same.

Im sharing this artwork more for fun then anything but it does paint a strong picture of life back in these times, and it really gives me the same feel that the atmosphere of the alpha gives.

Believed to be a Self Portrait.

The Procession to Calvary

The Adoration of the Kings

Massacre of the Innocents

I saved the Best for last, some of Bruegel’s works were reality bending. they were representations of Proverbs and idioms of the time.

The Topsy Turvy World- this piece is a representations of Proverbs and idioms of the time.

I would say Albrecht Dürer… a perfect choice; from woodcuts to watercolours, he was the man!

I searched for the Fugger family(since 1367).

The family book is amazing(maybe 1593 and later):

Here is some more Early Netherlandisch art.

While the perspective might look off to our modern eyes there is a lot you can learn from these paintings. It’s mostly details like furniture, landscape, clothing and housing that is interesting. Do note however that many of these paintings are from a different area of Europe and 30-50 years after act I of the game.

seems to me everything very gloomy and unpleasant … and those were mostly the “better off”. Is hard for our Henry …

It’s not that bad. The guy also painted a ton of peasant paintings.

yes, yes, the lucky farmers at harvest …
anyway if they were not as cannon fodder on the road and there was something to harvest

Prague at 1493, oldest known illustration of the city if I’m not mistaken.

Edit: I scanned some from a book about Bohemian Manuscripts:

1374 - Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia (one of the characters of the central plot of the game) very young here - also with a dog.

1480 - Wenceslaus IV as an adult with his wife

and finally imprisoned by Sigismund of Luxemburg (1480)

Some mundane tasks (all 1417)

Playing music (1417)

Bowling (1530)

Reconstruction of Jerusalem also a man without pants (1414)

Woman working as a bath custodian (1470)

Manufacture of glass (first quarter of the 15th century)

That would be Sigismund, though since it says his name in picture, it’s not particularly hard to figure it out.

Thanks, nice drawings. Just a little note: “Glassmaking” is dated to the 1st quarter of the 15th century. Source: British Library, MS 24189, folio 16

Oh, you’re right I made a mistake. I confused the caption with another illumination which was on the same page of the book.

Prag 1493 looks like Rothenburg o.d. Tauber today  (old Town)

not bad … had already plenty of kinky fantasies to the lower classes to motivate obedience
