medieval china has basically never been explored in games in any meaningful, interesting or mature way. always very silly and childish fantasy wu-shia or romance of the 3 kingdoms done in an anime/manga fashion where everyone is a teenager or young guy with big hair.

however, this is kind of a stupid suggestion considering that if act1 succeeds, there are still 2 more acts, which will take a combined time of at least 18 months to complete.

and also, one advantage of bohemia setting is the devs live there already, they know the history, have easy access to local historical resources. it would take a very long time and involve way more research that developers may not be familiar with.

In 3 years time then…

i would love to see someone bring KCD filosofy to a different setting, far-east has been scantily explored in a mature way… My personal favuorite would be Japan since i love their traditional culture, but both China or Korea would be great too (that would be also the chance to learn something more about their history).
But sadly i fear that even warhorse might be uncertain about investing money in such a project, KCD is already niche product (and has to stay that way if they want to keep true to their inspiring filosfy) and since most of the supporters of KCD are from europe (i guess) some of them might be turned away… but i definitely hope to see something like that happening…

true that. I’m Chinese (Surprise!) and i can attest that Chinese games and movies are just plain absurd. I dont know about you but if they make a realistic rpg of it i would play. ps the feudal system is a bit more complicated in my culture.

I would back this up definitely!
But honestly, I prefer a game setup in medieval Japan - Genpei or Sengoku period. Or maybe Mongol invasion in between them. Or possible Meiji restoration or Sino-Japanese war (if Warhorse could make gun+melee warfare working).
For the glory of Japan!
(I’m not an asian, I just adore Japan

hmm… I like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and I don’t think it’s neither silly or childish… and, although it’s not a movie or a game, I really liked 甄環传.

As far as my wife could explain me here in the Macdo, there were no Medieval period in China, and the feudal system was ending during the second dynasty.

I think the First Qin dynasty to Han would be ancient age. Tang, Sui and Song would be middle age. And Ming and Qin the more modern age. The painting is from the Song dynasty.

Total war shogun2 already covers Japan. China never.

You are assuming that based on what? Because is in the middle? Or based on the similarities between Medieval Europe and the period that you are talking about? If the latter then what are this similarities?

the feudal system like i said is a bit different. It technically (according to Chinese Marxist historians ended) in around the iron age. the time after that era still had a very similar to what we consider feudalism. The emperor would appoint people to rule over his land and he pay him.

Only on the last two dynasty the emperor had the right to appoint people. Before it was the job of the Prime Ministre.

Well, anyway… I would also like to see an ancient China game without the fantasy done properly.

as the historical work to get a plausible european medieval environement in a game, even from a developpement studio from europe that can access directly to the ressources they need, is a huge and complicated task, i thing that turn to the chineese medieval period is an even more complicated stuff. even if they can access the best historians, that would require far more time to devellop such a game (update?). but so far that is an interesting idea and as said upper, (realistic) medieval china isn’t much represented in video games.

A very simple explanation:

Xia, Shang, Spring and autumn, Warring states, Qin, West Han, East Han. = ancient times. Nobles ruled the government. Market economy was not that big, main industry was agriculture.

Tang, Sui, Song = Breaking down of feudalism. Development of technology (especially in Song period) The starting of the Imperial examinations (Any male individual can get a job in the government if they pass an exam.) Conflict between nobles and the rising intellectuals (The people who passed the exams). Development of market economy, less regulated market, youre allowed to walk at night and each district is not walled anymore (especially in Song period).

Yuen, Ming, Qin = More modern age because China was a great naval power during Ming period (Admiral Zheng He). Bureaucracy. Printing. (The romance of the three kingdoms.) A way to success was either to become a successful bushiness man or pass the national exam.) (For male only)

China republic = Modern age

To chemcaldruid:

Since when was Europe the only game developer? Since when was Chinese history not studied in universities? Its just that you don’t know much about Chinese history but that doesn’t mean the resources aren’t there. They are there. In English etc. There are many historians who are westerners and study Chinese history. And many Chinese people can speak English etc? (Hello?)

Its just that making Chinese history games will attract Chinese people. The game developers fear that even though they make a good game, pirated version will just be made and there wont be as much profit as there should be. We have to wait until the GDP per capita of the Chinese people rise to higher levels.

To Tomohare

How do you know so much about Chinese history?

There is one hope for non fantasy china themed games.

               Japan

Many Japanese like Chinese history. They’ve made many already like the KOEI series on the three kingdoms. But we wont be able to play it because its all in Japanese probably.

name last japanese game that didn’t have fantasy in it.

if they’re the last hope, then thee is no hope.

i didn’t sait that  i am aware that there are history museums an historians specialized in many different aspects of great civilisations and various cultures from all around the world. i’m just sayin it still is easiest to access the knowledge of local history. even if it is possbile i doubt that there is a massive amount of physical ressources (like ancient objects) , and european medieval specialists in china. so as the people were quite on the idea to see that kind of game develloped by the same studio, i think legit to say that acess to same amount of data would be a bit more difficult… i mean, there are logically more ressources on China’s history, in China than in europe and conversely. that being said, if you are aware of games from asian devellopers that worth this type of game, i would be interested. but please don’t take me for a dumbass, as interested in history (as we all are on this forum i guess) i am aware of diverses rescharch and specializations of european historians and museums.

Total War Shogun is a real-time / turn based strategy game, not an action RPG.
