So is the alpha 64 bit only?

Well, like it seems, KCD is 64bit only. Elsewise a process size of more than 2GB would not be possible

My computer run fine basically all the latest game but seems I can’t manage to run this game because of this… I hope we will have an official answer soon about this…

I would also appreciate it if an Official Person could confirm whether the Alpha requires a 64-bit version of Windows.

I’ve searched the FAQ here, but I can’t find anything that clearly states that KCD (or the Alpha) will require a 64-bit operating system.

Well, hope dies at last…

Hi Flatfingers,

They said so in a Youtube video if I remember well … Sorry for you.

Here there is

Thanks!
It seems the time to upgrade my PC has finally come.

Thank you, jockl5.

I know it’s hard to think of everything, but I wish Warhorse had communicated that information prominently somewhere. It’s no fun getting enthusiastic about helping make a game better and then discovering that you can’t.

But so it goes sometimes.

Wow. Thanks warhorse for telling us in advance, so we could decide if we actually wanted the alpha access, when we knew we won’t have 64bit computers this time yet.

This is probably why I can’t open it on Steam. Would have been nice to know the specs before hand.

Just so you know: If you bought your processor within last, say, 5 years, there’s a 90% chance, that it supports 64bit OS. And if you have Windows 8 (32bit), you can download 64bit Windows 8 anytime for free from microsoft.com (it’s actually a little bit tricky, so feel free to ask if you want to do that).
So its not like you don’t have the hardware to play KCD. You would just have to go through the chore of reinstalling your OS. Which is something that I myself probably won’t do just for the KCD alpha.

Pretty much this, it’s a a game build in cryengine people!

So is Crysis 3. And it runs fine.

But at some point you have to move on. You can’t support everything forever, it’s really sad how deprecated stuff still has to be supported because people use it. On the other hand, this should definitely communicated better if someone missed it.

According to Steam hardware statistics, about 77% of Windows users are running a 64-bit OS, compared to about 18% running a 32-bit OS.

So while it doesn’t benefit me personally, I can understand Warhorse deciding to target 64-bit Windows for its technical benefits.

Again, though… I just wish I’d known. Nothing they can do about that now, of course.

Well you could still update your system… I’m pretty sure here are a lot of people who would assist you if you have trouble doing it or describe what your concerns are. It’s just taking a bit of time but updating is always worth it.

I have been on 64bit CPU for a decade, since 2004. Even Crytek’s own Ryse does not support 32bit anymore. It’s time to let it go guys. Actually, that time has been 5 years ago if consoles and holdouts didn’t hold us back.

For those of you grousing… if I can be blunt…

Why… ON EARTH… would you have chosen the 32 bit version of Windows 8.1!!! What possible cost savings or advantage was in it for you? I’ve been running 64 bit since XP… yeah, it was little rough on occasion then… but no problems from Vista forward (well, other than Vista being steaming pile of code in general… but it certainly wasn’t a 64 vs 32 bit problem…) Running Win 7 Ultimate 64 now

I actually assumed this would be 64 bit only thing… like all the other major games hitting now.

Your 32 bit Windows is not going to just screw you here, but in several other games and programs.

Honestly, the thing to do is upgrade your copy of Windows. You can be obstinate about it, hold on to your 32 bit version out of … pride? But the fact is… you made a mistake buying a 32 bit copy of Windows… sorry about that. You don’t just want 64 bit for KC: D but for lots of other programs as well. By buying a 32 bit Windows… you bought into obsolescence right out of the shiny new box. I didn’t even know a 32 bit version of 8.1 existed honestly. What’s an OEM Win 8.1 64 going for? $100? Maybe Microsoft has a 32 bit to 64 bit upgrade that is cheaper. I don’t know. Like I said, my last 32 bit OS was around 2002 or so.

You can be angry at Warhorse, disappointed… or you can fix the problem. And to do that, you want a 64 bit OS.

If you want to be angry at someone… be angry at Microsoft for suckering you into a 32 bit OS…

No one is being angry, much less at Warhorse.
And there are reasons to use 32bit OS you know. Mainly the ability to run old 32bit-only software, which is something that I have to be able to reliably do, as I use my computer mainly for work.
But as I said - noone is blaming anyone. I’ll just calmly skip the Alpha and make a plan for a complete computer reinstall sometime within the next year to be ready for full KCD release.
And as I mentioned above - if someone already owns a 32bit Windows 8, he should be able to download the 32bit version for free.

Most 32 bit software runs flawlessly on 64 bit. Only old hardware without 64 bit driver support are problematic.
If you absolutely need a 32 bit OS you can use virtualization or dual boot.
