That’s the main reason why the topics of torture and the death of children (which is noticeably absent from the majority of games (eg. Skyrim, and Fallout where the kids are invincible) are so controversial in media (and I say media in general because it’s not very often that you see a child killed on screen during movies or television).

However, you have a valid point that murder is often represented in games, while other adult themes are absent. But you have to remember that it’s a fine line that a game developer or movie producer has to walk. you’re also setting a precedent for games filled with other adult (and generally avoided topics) such as rape and for the sake of argumentative purposes, even pedophilia. I think it’s safe to assume (even though it does make an a** out of you and me :wink: ) that the general populace doesn’t necessarily want to see the majority of these topics, and therefore won’t buy a game that includes them. Which is why you don’t see a lot of edgy material in games. Media is a business, and you sell to the largest demographic; which typically are not sadists. :wink:

I personally don’t care either way, but its there,its has a long (infamous) history in game and i have a feeling it will come up in future games as well.

This game is about realism and choice. In my opinion, it should be in the game and it should be as realistic as possible. Let’s say we have a quest to get information from somebody. There could be the possibility to torture him, find out where he lives and threaten to torture his wife / children (thief approach?), or maybe just bribing him (bard approach?). It should be possible, but the player should always have the choice.

If it’s part of the story, then do it. If not, I don’t think there’s any need of bringing it in just for morbidity.

Haha well It doesn’t have to be like that. If anything it should just be a message explaining that there are advanced options to turn graphic content off. Then in the menu you could have:
Blood/Gore ON OFF
Nudity ON OFF
Graphic Scenes Including Torture etc. ON OFF

It would be really simple, and not intrusive, and on top of that the developers could monetize on both the “hardcore” and the “casual” (in respect to realism/ graphic content) players.

I think I’m with @213’s first comment. This game is meant to be for older audiences so why wouldn’t torture be in this game?

Another topic I want to hit on while in this thread is the idea that some people want the option to turn certain things on and off. I reiterate myself, the game is meant for mature audiences; if a player can’t handle language, fake nudity, and fake violence they probably shouldn’t be playing a game like this one.

There is a huge difference, for the developer, between hacking up a random NPC on the street and explicit torture mini games. Swinging your sword at your opponent is just a basic gameplay system, the minimum requirement in a medieval combat game. Killing random innocent NPCs is just the player using that system how they please.
Torture mini games is the developer explicitly allowing the player to participate in sadistic behaviour, there is no benign purpose to a torture mini game. Obviously that is up to the developer but it is a moral question for them and will have an effect on ratings etc.

From what I know, medieval justice was often some form of torture. Burning at the stake, being drawn and quartered, etc. were all forms of capital punishment meant not only for punishment, but also to torture the “wrong-doer.” This lead to things like the guillotine, which was a form of capital punishment designed to end life, as opposed to inflicting pain.

Warhorse said something like “There are going to be things even we don’t like, but they were happening so they will be in the game.” and “If player commits a crime he can be put into torture chamber” so torture will definitely be there. How it will displayed and interacted with is different story, and I hope it will be as naturalistic as possible (no rivers of blood, but no tickling).
As for the player being able to torture some, I think it would be good to have it only through the conversation with the executioner (i.e. you can only tell him whether he should stop or continue and you will act as an interrogator), this way there is no need for sadistic minigames with using mouse for rotating the wheel of a rack (or whatnot) + it will be realistic - it was only executioner’s job to inflict the pain (I might be wrong here though, feel free to correct me)

Medieval age doesn’t mean there wasn’t any law or law enforcers so everybody could do whatever they want, for example torture. Quite a opposite. Crimes were punished without remorse.

If you look at one of the screenshot it clearly shows someone being burned alive so i assume torture will be in the game.

I’d like it to be as edgy as possible. So I’d be in favor of disembowelment and stretching, etc. just like I saw them do to William Wallace in Braveheart. To those who say it’s too much, I’d like to remind them that IT’S NOT REAL. It’s a video game. Snap out of it.

you’re not a herbalist or an alchemist either but apparently you can dabble, not as a profession, but simply an acquired skill. and i don’t expect you’ll stay a blacksmith forever in this game, or at least when you’re out doing other things. i fully anticipate the ability to be aggressive and take over the role of the torturer when he fails to get results, i may inadvertently kill the prisoner this way.

but of course there are factors, too many to name, but a few mentioned above, that will work in concert to make this wonderful feature and expression of the grim realities of the medieval period from gaining the exposure it deserves in this game
