Rituals in medieval times

Taking this good post as fist step, I would like to say that rituals where very very important in medieval times. I will just present some short notes:

  • ritual as communication
  • ritual as conntract (when there could not be a written contract)
  • ritual for showing social status
  • ritual for showing and making(!) “Herrschaft”

some examples:

  • Kisses between man (Im not talking about homosexuality)
  • Accolade
  • Strator
  • ‘Handleite’

important thing: if you act against what you have shown in a ritual, nobody will trust you anymore…

Whats in your mind? Should this have impact in the game? Do you have other examples notes or opinions?

Yes! I agree! Those rituals would make the game much more realistic and more “alive”. NPC would not just be quest giver/shops but also people that you must convince and of whom you must earn respect.
And thanks for quoting me

Here’s another idea I have:
Let’s say something to NPCs outside of dialogues on the fly. For example, in Judge Dredd, you could press a specific key and Dredd would say: “On on your knees, creep!” (one of many lines)

Keyboard controls:
[1] -> Yell threats: “Give me your money or I’ll kill you!”, etc.
[2] -> Shout insults: “Thou art like a toad; ugly and venomous.”, “Thou art unfit for any place but hell.”, etc.
[3] -> Friendly words in normal voice: “Have a nice day.”, “Isn’t it a lovely day?”, “Pleasure to meet you.”, and similar remarks.

Imagine this situation:
A farmer is hoeing on the field (just as seen in video update #5).
The player goes next to him and presses [2] on the keyboard and Henry shouts: “What are you looking at, you ugly dog?” Now the NPC stops what he’s doing and since it was an insult Henry shouted at him, he will insult back.

As for the threats, people will look at your clothes and act accordingly (as stated in the live stream video).
And for friendly remarks, of course, you will receive friendly remarks as well. Except the NPC you’re greeting has an ‘asshole’-gene written in his behavior pattern then he will say something grumpy.

It would be great to include verbal, non-verbal, para-verbal and extra-verbal communication with the environment but Im’ not sure if this communication happens in the running game or in a dialogue scene.

As a part of cinematics and conversations? Yeah, sure. But I don’t think they would be plausible as a part of emergent gameplay.

it would have to be dialog, wouldn’t it? imagine the chaos of having them all binded to keys and accidentally shouting an insult in the vicinity of a lord, or using the wrong gesture or voice command.

i can see them as part of every dialog option. so other than the dialog choices, you have some small buttons at the bottom always available like "hand shake, shoulder pat, slap, etc that affects how npc respond to you.

possibly too difficult and immersion breaking though. slap a lord? haha

Easy fix? Go at it like Fable

Hold button (or key) for wheel, and choose your outburst!
