Thanks, it would seem that crime DOES pay. 
I’m trying to roleplay my playthrough and I can be a rascal who does some naughty stuff when needed, but I would prefer to avoid outright breaking and entering and stealing people clean. I think I might try the archery contest. 
I normally clear the shops and small tower at around 2ish…I then hit the armory at 6am as it’s the best time before the guard switch over.
Not really a good way to earn lots of gr. I would go hunting for boar and deer. Cook the meet to remove the stolen icon then sell that to as many traders as possible
Problem is not to find loot, problem is nobody has enough Groschen to give you. The best way is to unlock chests of traders with the Groschen and travel on the roads to find bandits with more coins.
Or give all your loot to a miller then pick lock his chest it will always stay unlocked then once the miller has sold the item in 3 days or so open the chest and take the gr
