Regarding the triangles: check the bottles to your left 
I didn’t play much and won’t until next weekend… maybe. But you should maybe pour the liquid into the bowl, put the ingredients in it and heat it up. I guess that’s part of the Alpha: Will the player figure out the functionality without any tutorial.
Thistles should be along roadsides, I guess you generally just walk through the world with your head down first to find all the stuff you need.

Triangles in the recipe book – do you mean symbols for Water and Alcohol? I guess these are just for fun.
