Yeah, as Skoruligr said… If you had sword, it was usually symbol of your status. Every peasant could have improvised axe, pitchfork or some crude mace, but proper sword meant that you are not just some lowlife peasant. And this carries on to this day - when you want to decorate your apartment with weapons, most people still goes for swords, not ugly maces
