The Home Secretary has also now announced any EU nationals who commit crimes here after a 12 month prison senstence here will be deported and in some cases banned from the UK in line with anyone from outside the EU who commits a crime here .

This is common practice here. Although it is not automatic, but usually part of the sentencing.
Also, coming back is considered a crime, so once they are caught after being given deportation order, they may face jail time again.
Typically they would be given 7 days order to leave after being caught 1st time but considered perpetuating a crime after being caught second time which in most cases leads to mandatory remand until deportation.
This is the way Czech government dealt with migrants who did not file for asylum here (asylum application success rate here is the same as in Germany, but the magnitude of total numbers is different due to low application numbers) but only wanted to travel through, and that is why migrant phone applications recommended to avoid the country at all cost… most who got caught here actually were trying to do exactly that but got on a wrong trains (you can go from Vienna to Berlin either through Austria, or through the Czech Republic).
I wouldn’t support it but I understand it given the magnitude of the problem in the UK. Generally I would hate government shifting responsibility for its job on citizens.

There was a law proposed recently that would have allowed the government to imprison illegals who have come back to the U.S after being deported, this was proposed after a women was murdered by a man who had been deported 5 times. But it’s racist so the law did not pass.
