Janissaries at the time aren’t different than Mamluks. Devshirme system was first practiced during the rule of Murat II (1421-1444 1446-1451). Ottomans never used Christians in the army and Janissaryes are only a small part of the Ottoman army before they seiged the de facto rule of the state and at that times they are selected from Muslim families. Even those selected with devshirme system are only an ex-Christian, they are assimilated and converted to Bektashi Order.
