Backpack and shield on back

I really hope there will be bacpacks, tents and camping stuff as well as the possibility to put your shield on you back (even while having a backpack and a cloak)

Considering the popularity of mods like “Armed to the teeth”, “Dual Sheath + Shields on back” and various backpack mods for Skyrim, I’m sure we’ll get mods for it, if it’s not in the original game.

I really like it too. Especially having unequipped items visible on your body. Like having your sword sheathed at your side, even though you’re using your spear.

I will make a killing selling fold-able shields that fit in a backpack and tent cloths that can double as backpack.

But why would anyone want to carry a tent around?

I think the map is not large enough to bring the urge for camping and a tent. Why sleeping in the woods when you can sleep at home? Since i guess the player house will be somewhere central on the map. regarding the map size of 9square km, then the maximum distance to the furthest point on the map home will be more or less around 2km assuming a square map shape. I think only outlaws hide somewhere in the forest. I think otherwise there would be taverns or something similiar.
Only maybe if you go hunting and wait for the deer or boar at nights.
the idea with the shield is nice but i dont think you carrying this heavy thing always around with you. maybe you store it some where (horse, home) unless you are planing to fight.

Of course you always need to lunge a shield with you! And a bow, and a replacement bow, and two other swords, and another chest plate in case your current one gets bumps on it. And five brooms for some reason, three bowls of soup and a good half of the local health industry.

Shields where carried on the back with the help of a Guige, a leather belt to hang it over your shoulder, as seen on various artwork, such as the Bayeux Tapestry (really vague in my opinion).

I have seen it on a templar shield before, and I think it’s mostly used when on a horse, or fighting with other weapons.

I’m pretty sure they said that the 9 sq.km. size made the map around the size of Oblivion’s map.

I dunno about you… but If I was out on the coast or in the mountains… I didn’t want to trek back to the imperial city every night to go to bed.

And since hunting is a part of the game… I’m hoping some kind of on the go sleep system exists.

@allolouis Yup…Backpacks… or at least some kind of carrying container. I hate that games don’t have those… I mean heck…Skyrim even HAD a backpack item that you could find lying around… Why there wasn’t an equipable version is beyond me.

hmm ok you might be right.

If you take a look at the live-stream, when they ride to the stables. They state that they’re going to ride for 1.5 km. It takes them approximately 2 minutes and 30 seconds to get there. This means that a horse travels at an avg. speed around 36 km/h. Humans have an avg. walking speed of around 5 km/s, so if you were to walk the distance, it would take around 20 minutes. Humans run long distances at speeds ranging from 8 km/h to 13 km/h, so that would mean around 10 minutes of travel. This is all real-time. I can definitely see the point of bringing a tent.

I would like to have a tent, too
you must not equip it if you want to walk your way home

well what about inns instead of camping plenty of games had it like oblivion and it would make more sense than lugging around all of your gear whenever you go somewhere.

Yeah… but I imagine if I’m out in the woods at night and need to sleep, I’d rather set up camp than hoof it all the way back to town.

I agree with this idea. It’s been said by the developers there will a dozen or so small villages. This allows for a few strategically placed inns where you can get your rest before going ranging the next day. You would have to carry with your whatever tools you think you’d need for your ultimate destination (a fishing pole for fishing, a shield for battle, whatever). Whenever you’re back in the main town (or wherever your home is) you can swap out your gear and set forth for another adventure.

Let’s calculate a bit more:
Let’s say your house is in the exact middle of the map, and the map is square. Now let’s assume you spend roughly the same amount of time on every point on the map. I know this is a big assumption, but we can’t really say anything about the specifics yet.

So now let’s find the average distance to the center. The map is square, and the area is 9 km2, so when we fix the point of origin at our house, the square containing the map will be an amount of points, defined by -0.5 L ≤ x ≤ 0.5 L and -0.5 L ≤ y ≤ 0.5 L, when L is the length of a side in the square.
Therefore, the average distance would be:

We’ll now calculate the time it takes to travel that distance. From my earlier post, we found that a horse travels at an avg. running speed of 36 km/h in the game. A human walks with a speed of 5 km/h and runs at 10 km/h (roughly). Therefore:

Now, let’s convert that to in-game time. Skyrim’s default timescale was set to 20. Let’s use this as an example:

Considering that these are the average times you would use to get to your bed every day, and that you would have to travel back in the morning, you would use up quite a lot of your day by travelling.

So if you didn’t have a horse, you would have to spend at least 20 % of your time running to and from your home.
Thanks to Sciweavers for their online Latex editor.

EDIT - Had to redo the equations. Somehow they got messed up.
