It is actually not true that people were dirty in the time. Even peasants were keeping themselves clean by streams and lakes, sometimes even cleaner than townspeople. Clothes had to last a long time so if they got ripped they were stitched right away. Bath houses were in every town and even the lowest class of towns used them, even the beggars had right to use the bath houses for free in some cases. Yes the World was stinky because people threw their shit on the street but people themselves were not so.
