A Topic On Crime!

Hmmmm, I like this idea of being hunted down by the King or other bandits or hunters simply because you may have done something reckless against the law which adds to your bounty.

Its kinda like bounty hunting, hunt down criminals inorder to please your king or you be the criminal - if youre worth lets say realistically something like £10,000 which is quite ENOURMOUS at the time then if people see you, they would have some sort of reaction (as they may have seen a picture of your sketched face on a bounty poster), then go and tell others about it and people would try to capture you maybe ?

Thats when the building your own place comes in, to basically defend yourself and stuff. If you get caught, inorder to get out, you have to fight through tournaments and become a champion to gain your freedom OR you can try to fight through JAIL which reallistically impossible. This then lead to when you go watch a tournament match, you are actually watching the criminals fighting for their freedom. I just wrote this really quick, sorry if it doesnt make any sense to certain people.

SORRY! If this has already been addressed.

I like the idea of NPCs (such as town guards) reacting to your character if you’ve been breaking the law. Once the character’s reputation hits a certain point guards will actively seek the character out to bring him to justice.

I don’t know about the tournament or building your own place. I think that’s outside of the scope for the crime system. During the Kickstarter they posted something about detention or even torture for your character if caught doing evil deeds. Maybe there will be a skill reduction for time spent incarcerated.

Or plan some sort of jailbreak mission with your friends ? And break out ? I guess, all games will get repetitive at some point, so might aswell add as much as possible to hold the player’s interests for a longer period of time.

Unless, they have some freaky intelligent ideas that would prevent repetition

Fight through tournaments to gain your freedom? Too fantasy. This wasn’t antic Rome or Game of Thrones, there was no such “tournaments”. And mainly there was no free people. Fight through jail is pure fantasy too, as you in fact already wrote. I would recommend visit any well-preserved castle from middle ages. These dungeons … no way out

Yes unless you have help from the outside it would be really hard, but there could be a hidden way out for each dungeons, like a few loose stones here or a loose grate there to try to use and get out, but I would think the best bet would be if they had you work it off and maybe you could try to escape while you were working or you could work it off and make good?

Ive just read some article about medieval prison and this is what I’ve got…

“Escapes were rarely attempted even though these prisons were pretty easy to break out of. Geltner believes one reason for this is that, except for the wealthier residents, conditions within the prison were likely no worse than they would have faced outside as violence rarely occurred and they had food and a place to sleep. Additionally, if someone escaped, where would he (or she) go?”

Some more info:

“While many prisoners were allowed to roam at will within the walls and some were even allowed outside, some were chained.”

So what do you think ? Should it be more dangerous outside ? Or prison ? Lool

Some quick thoughts
The idea of prison in 15th century Bohemia was a miles away from what it is today or even from the things described in mr. Geltners book “The medieval prison”. I havent read the book but judging its cover (should not do that shame on me! ;)) I can see it is focused on penitentiary system in italian city states which is IMHO a completely different world in 14th and 15th century, mainly because from our perspective they were kind of ahead of time. Already establishing firm burecratic system and codified laws, AFAIK a prison for debtors is recored in 16th century in Prague’s Daliborka tower.
So frankly I am not sure, maybe the justice system in developed city states was meant to correct instead of punish and set an example and I might try to get my hands on this book toi investigate it. But right now in the early 15th century Bohemia if you are handed to justice for severe crime, I am gonna stick, with good old hangings, chopping limbs, burrying alive, burning at stake and most fashionable of all breaking wheel (see)! And in this system jail is any hellhole you are thrown into before a verdict is carried, being it a tower in a castle or a cellar under the local inn.

As i know it there were no real prisons in 15 century, only cells in witch you awaited for your punishment. When someone was put before court he was already guilty and they were deciding only on punishment. More often were used punishments as cage of shame, cutting of hands for stealing, gallows, stock, pit atc… i don’t think they would put you for 2 years to prison for stealing, more likely they would punish you like cut of your hand, why should they feed you 2 years and give you accommodation. In villages was common punishment to banish people from community.

Yes, medieval prison wasn’t long term vacation. Sometimes it was, but without food and water, in czech called “hladomorna”.

People in mediaval europe was quite inventive about methods of turture and punishment. Next favorites methods of punishments were pillory of shame, marking thieves on the forehead, diving into the river (tied on the chair), for serious crimes even quartering (post-mortem or in the worst case alive) and tearing apart by horses.

And there was of course countless numbers of “smaller” punishments like grinding thumbs, stretching on the rack etc.

Fun fact - turture chambers and dungeons mostly wasn’t at the castles, these things were placed under town halls. Today you can see turture tools etc. on the castles, but it’s just for the effect.

I would really like to have humiliating punishments like pillory of shame/“pranger” for smaller crimes. Let’s say you get caught stealing an apple. The guards then put you to the pillory and people passing by will insult you or throw things (e.g. stones) at you. Let’s say this punishment lasts 5 minutes with an option for the player to skip to the end. Any other punishment of public humilition you can think of?
I would also prefer to see NPCs getting punished from time to time (not to often).

P.S.: In the trailer it looks like somebody gets burnt on a stake (heretic?).
