About mini games inside the game

Hi,
I saw the last YouTube video and I was deceived that backgamon was going to be a mini game. Why backgamon ? I don’t like backgamon. And it is long and hard to play. Why not chess, checkers, dice games, card games (holdem poker ? no I’m kidding), and why not a small archery competition with a nice reward ?
Cheers

Given that draughts is perhaps 5000 years old, it would be perfectly reasonable to see it in this game.

A tournament mode is already confirmed. So an archery competition will most likely be in the game.

And dice games were also already shown in the video…

I’m looking for pazaak … oh wait …

You might not like Backgamon but some others do; keep an open mind you will always like thing more then others. Even so if you abuse of what you like to much you might get bored so learn to play a bit of everything. More mini games more time to waste fooling around and having some fun.

With WH putting so much effort into historical accuracy, why not pull from a list of Historically Accurate Game Rules?

  • Backgammon has been around a while.
  • Checkers (as we know it now) would have been called, “Draughts,” or would have been the 5x5 ancestor to checkers from Egypt, “Alquerque.”
  • Chess is often MUCH, MUCH more drawn out than backgamon. I don’t want to spend more than 30minutes playing a mini-game, and that would only work with speed-chess, which only Pros enjoy.

I might suggest some of these instead:

  • Fox and Geese
  • Nine (or 12) Men’s Morris
  • 9x9 or 13x13 Go.
  • Knucklebone.

UGH!!! 9 Men’s Morris…

Either I am REALLY bad at it…or the mini game AI in Assassin’s Creed III/IV was super OP.

Both. There are some tricks you have to learn, kinda like memorizing all the outcomes of tic-tac-toe. With Nine Men’s Morris, each placement has to plan for both your opponents next 2 moves, and for position after all are placed. AC’s AI looked like a chess AI set to Morris, which usually plans 5 to 20 moves ahead… so definitely a bit OP for Morris.

I searched for some hobbies and the likes from those times and this is what I could find:

Alquerques (early form of “Checkers”)
Archery
Backgammon
Bowls
Chess
Dice & Gambling
Dancing
Fox & Geese
Gameball (early form of “football”)
Hammer Throwing
Hawking
Hunting
Jousting
Nine Men’s Morris
Pitching Quoits ( early form of “Horseshoe”)
Stoolball (early form of “Cricket”)
Story Telling
Rithmomachy or also known as The Philosophers Game
Tournament or Competition
Wrestling

I wouldn’t mind boxing/wrestling like they had in the Witcher (preferable the informal pub brawl type)

Don’t suppose they had playing cards or simple dice betting back then?

Cards no, dice yes.

Wrestling maybe yes.

Well, you have to seperate leisure time activities of the nobility and the peasantry here. Stuff like hunting, jousting, tournaments and stuff was only done by the nobility while some other acitivies were only done by the peasantry. But overall, good list.

Games with marked stones, runes, etc… some Egyptian variations of Senet with dice, potentially dating as far back as 1400 BC. By the 1400’s card games were more popular than dice games, especially among the more wealthy, but both had been around for quite some time. Many estimates suggested card games were well known in Germany by the 1200’s.

You have sources for that?

How is it about the ingame time during mini games and dialogs? I mean, one day in Kingdom Come Deliverance will be shorter than a real day, maybe 2 hours or so? How does it fit with longer minigames like backgammon where you can sit there like an hour or so? And what does the AI do with it, if they wanted to play a game in the evening after their work? If they come to the tavern and start to play it will be early evening and in the end it will be the middle of the night or even the next morning.
And what is, if the player wants to play a game and thinks slow? Will the opponent die of hunger during the match, or even the player?

Backgammon and dice were probably the most popular desk games in that time. Traditional playing cards were likely still a big rarity reserved for the better off in Bohemia by 1403. Without a printing press they were expensive to manufacture as they were mostly hand drawn… As far as I know the oldest cards found in Bohemia are from 1520s. During 15th and especially 16th century they were becoming more common in Bohemia.

This has been covered in one of the game presentations to students at universities. I am sure someone has a youtube link on hand that would take me long to find.
