Advice on fighting, parry especially needed

Hi there!

Been trying my hand at fighting the first dude who comes running after you at the castle, now I understand that I am intended to be running hence the quest, but I took the chance to practice fighting as I thought the tutorial was a bit short on that.

And boy am I missing a lot of things, sure enough the tutorial needs more in regards to blocking and parrying in it.

What I have deduced from headbutting this fight over and over for what is now close to 200 times, blocking is ineffectual, drains too much stamina in this encounter, perhaps it gets better as my stats gets higher late game, but at this point blocking seems to hurt more than it helps, as it is liable to only delay my death.
Better to attack and maybe take a strike and put the AI on the defensive as it seems to think my strikes would hurt. But it usually doesn’t matter, the dude takes punishment like a boss, and I’m genuinely intrigued if he is killable at all. If so, what is his healthpool and how many strikes would one need (on average)?
Anyway I’ll supply with an excerpt from about 10 fights I had recently:

Can some one tell me what could up my game?
I am guessing parrying at all would help, but I’ll be damned if I could figure out how, doesn’t seem to be a window for a block, I’ve tested pressing the block at various points of the guys attack to see if I can trigger the “bullet time” effect, but that doesn’t happen. So how do I block and if so point to an example when I need to do so, and if I shouldn’t be using the block key what should I be using?
The bullet time I do get is when he parries/reposts/doges my attacks though, is there anything I can do here as well other than glaring slightly frustrated at the slow motion display of my own guts spilling out?

As for prefered attacks to this type of opponent, what would be favoured the most?
Slashing or prodding? I figured I’d try to chain with a finishing poke as he seemed to dodge back to that mostly, giving me breathers for stamina regeneration and limiting his counter attacks, and thinking that it would pierce his armour better. But honestly I can’t tell if it is doing anything in my favour.

So anyone who tried this game in the beta or longer able to advice me on this fighting system by looking at my horrid display of ineptitude?

Yes Henry is an absolute novice at sword fighting and you are fighting a battle hardened Cuman mercenary.

Honestly even if you knew combat system in full, you would still be out matched in skill. Lets not forget it is an RPG and player Skills are a factor.

Everyone has same HP pool.

Armour rating then, whatever makes his effective health pool higher than mine ^^

Whenever you lose stamina or low on it, back away. Of course he killed you in few seconds.
You also seem to swing to the air. He has skill, but you do not have polearm. Get up close.

Back away as in detargeting him? and moving away reversing or turning and going the other direction?

Cause a lot of the time when I was low I was going in reverse, he just kept up and if I didn’t prime another attack he would attack me, and seeing as I can’t parry and my blocks only lead to stamina loss I usually end up dead anyway

Hi - you can’t parry or riposte at this stage of the game. Soon after prologue you will be taught to, but you can’t now - and only way to deflect his slowmo riposte is by parry :frowning:

Also - he is not taking any damage from you, no matter how many strikes you land, unless it is in one big combo - your blade cannot penetrate his armor at all. Your hits damage only his stamina, and only if he runs out of stamina you can damage him, but he has bigger stamina pool then you do, so good luck.

You can try to steal a horse and fight him from horse back, he can’t parry that  also ramming him with horse deals lot of damage

Aahh, thank you, pointless endeavour to pick this fight for practice then. Thanks for the on-point reply!

Not to worry, I learned the hard way aswell. You will learn dodge and parry in rattay, and riposte bit after that

Henry is basically a 17 year old “you” given a sword for the very first time and told to fight an experienced club or international fencer… have fun with that (or not) till you get trained.
