Ai question

Just curious. I read some Posts, and heard devs Talk about the npc, not only enemy but All pc ai, being advanced, reacting to enviroment and such. But how does the ai in this Game differ from ai in Skyrim, tw3 and other rp games? As far as i can see, the ai is just on a preprogammed schedule, sleep, wake up, work, and so on. The work they do is preprogammed animations, sweep, smith, stand at a trader stand, carry sack from a to b. Am i missing something, cause i can’ t see the difference from any other game?

I can see a huge difference tbf… in witcher 3 the AI worked. In this the AI is all over the place lol. So unstable and like you say it’s only preprogrammed schedules and some of them are stupidly simple.

@Tau1310 Most of the modern rpgs state that they have dynamic AI.
Reacting to Environment and such means that e.g. they will recognise you If your renown is high enough or Things Like that. It’s pretty much a Thing everyone has (i mean, even G3 and Oblivion already Had a renown system)
Although as advertising this Game to be “as realistic as possible while keeping it fun to Play” you could think there would be more. But in the other Hand the whole Story is taking place in Just one Summer - there’s actually Not that much Change in ones Life (except If cumans start raiding your Village).

You also really got to See the Limits of cryengine Here…it’s Just Not Made for Open world, But often the only affordable nice Looking 3D engine for small devs.

@Neooonfriction i can’t see the ai beeing bugged with their schedules. I mean, what would you think, that they swap through their Jobs or Something? Beeing a Miller essentially means Producing flour Most of the day. Maybe selling it and doing small repairs in your Mill (and ofc occaisonally Picking a lock).

LoL! My question was actually to find out how this ai is better? :joy: It is exactly like any other game. It’s just that people use this “advanced ai” argument to explain why the game can’ t run as good as other better looking console games, like hzd and tw3 and such. But i see thoose features in every game. It is the norm tbh.

Yes, i have looked a lot on the dynamic ai in this game, there are also vids on the wh YouTube channel showing npcs running from the rain, i have yet to see One npc do that now? So why is it not in game? In TW3 ai actually take cover from rain, So this non existent Feature would not even be New if it was in game. I fail to see what makes this game new and revolutionary?

Well i’ve Seen enough npc running from the Rain…though Not everyone does it the Same. I don’t know what you’re expecting the ai to do.
It wasn’t advertised for it’s revolutionary ai, Just advertised as dynamic.
It’s Like Advertisement for a Deodorant, telling you it’s going to Last for Up to 12 hours. Well cool, that’s nice, there are Others that Last equally or even Longer, But i Like this one for the combination of its fragrance and so on.

OK, maybe i just missed that Feature then. :slightly_smiling_face: Will look Harder, cause it’s a cool feature to have in a game. Like small things like that. Good for immersion. And My question was more regarding why this ai would make the game harder to run on console than other games with same dynamic ai. Cause i have been told that when bringing up fps issues. So just got curious if there was something regarding ai i might have missed.

i dont know, but maybe its related to player being framed for murder when wayfarer sees you kill cumans on a holdup, this is really annoying.

in my opinion the AI is similar to Skyrim but they just puted more work on there schedule, in skyrim most of the NPC just had 2-3 schedules like going to work then sleep, in this game its a bit more complicated like they go to work then go to shopping then some NPC go to other places like the bathhouse and in the evening most of them gather in the tavern, sometimes you can even change there daily schedule by interacting with them in some way.

as for Witcher 3 there AI and NPC were simple NPC spawn at day and despawn at night some NPC stayed there the whole time day and night none of them had schedule . the only cool thing they had is that there AI reacted to rain when it rained they ran to cover.(not criticizing witcher 3 it was a great game)

in the game and Skyrim NPC never spawn and despawn like the witcher 3 they are always there.

The worst time was when an NPC said “Hello Henry” even though he didn’t know who I was when I talked to him.

This happens if your renown in a certain area is high enough. People are talking to each other you know, they recognize who you are even though they never saw you before. I Think that this is happening a bit to early though…

Yeah, but when I talked to him he asked me to identify myself. It was that guy who tried to pinch a runaway horse.

I know these type of things are bound to happen in a game this big and complex though.

I am playing tw3 at the moment, while i am waiting for wh to make this game the Great game it has the potential to be. And in tw3 npc actually do have schedule. Like wake up, work, go to sleep. They actually go to their houses at night and so forth. And take cover when raining. :yum: Some og them atleast. I Play some kcd aswell. Made Henry into a botanist, to become a pharmacist. I don’t care for the main Story. I just wanted a Medieval Simulator. And got it.

Realizing that there are going to be quirks in a sophisticated game, and that it isn’t going to be completely 100% the best AI, you have to enjoy the stupid encounters and roll with them. I have seen a lot of cool things like people running out of the rain, and shop vendors having varying “open” times, but I have seen a lot of stupid stuff that makes you think, wth just happened. Again, it’s a game and it’s going to be quirky sometimes. I generally get a chuckle out of them.

I saw only few different AI “state”:

  1. citizen — do routine and react on player state change by catchword or call the guards
  2. guard — do same boring thing, but can start dialog with player
  3. assaulter — just attack or ask surrender

So, for eg. Ginger Reeky (in 1.2.2, i dont even try do main quest in 1.2.5 because bug reports ) player can help with bandits and then Reeky become a citizen AI and call guards if player looting bandits body.
Or for instance, bandits can stop be an assaulter AI and become citizen AI, and player cant attack them near guards because this trigger the crime. And so on.
I know nothing about CryEngine, but many post around AI told me that devs can’t fix this issue with that engine.

Any way, for achieve “a lot on the dynamic ai in this game” most of personalized NPC must have self AI, not only 3 stage switch. Like Reeky is bandit and cant call guards, Captain Bernard cant be casual guard, etc.

And this will never happen.

The AI is so dam good in this game that a guard or a trader can recognize a stolen carrot!!

Wow! Maybe it was grown in another kind of dirt than the legal carrots. And he have a really good sense of smell.
