Having this same issue. Tried all the different tips and tricks listed. Nothing.
My game crashed when the world first loaded. But after I turned down the graphics from Very High to just High it started up smoothly and now runs great.

it finally works for me
in my first pc my sp1 had to be improperly installed I remade a full install and itâs good
on my other pc I had no sp1 and I had the same problem i install sp1 and is good
I have the same problem.
vcredist and all installed and repaired, still the game does not start!
I got windows7 64 installed a few weeks ago and played plenty games without problems (drivers up to date etc.)

Came here to help with the same solution, but @ave beat me to it.
Goddamn Window$ C++ causes all those pesky issues with games.
Rule of thumb - when you try to start a game and it breaks with some kind of 0x000088s error, you can bet it is caused by VC++. Remove old versions (from control panel) and install the latest, BOTH 32 AND 64 bit. This should fix the problems not only with Deliverance, but with the newest Civilization and many more games!
I fixed it by installing windows 7 service pack 1.
