Okay, so, let me begin by saying I’m running a playthrough of Henry as a mercenary archer. As an archer, I wouldn’t know how to read, since only nobility can read at the time, and so I avoid all reading related quests (Pestilence is a big one that needs reading)
At the Monastery, in order to get in, you need to have Karl’s writ and be able to read (or be able to break a very hard lock and sneak your thieving ass in) When Brother Porter asks if you can read, Henry will outright say no. Why? Henry has lied before, and he should know how important it is to get into the monastery, so why wouldn’t he lie to get in? (This route would make the alchemy and Latin transcribing a fucking nightmare, but I’ve never gotten a single Latin text correct anyways so what does it matter?)
So the question is, was this an overlooked part of the game, a complete block and, ‘‘fuck you, do it our way or the hard way,’’ or a simple Speech check gone awry? (I had two points of Speech more than Porter’s, but I still failed the Speech check)
I just find it extremely odd that Henry goes ahead and lies, saying, ‘‘Yeah, I’m Karl, the new novice,’’ but then doesn’t lie about reading, despite the fact Brother Porter and the monastery ALREADY knows Karl is the son of a noble (so obviously he can read. There is no need whatsoever to even ask him that question. The only thing that Brother Porter should have asked is if Henry has the writ, not if he can read), why he is being sent there, that he is supposed to appear with his guardian Manfred, so Henry saying he can’t read is either a complete oversight by Warhorse or Henry simply has short term memory loss (which is expected with how many times he gets banged over the head by a sword or mace)
