Animations compare with other games

Hey guys,

The combat techniques are fantastic. But why are the alpha sword animations so abrupt and have little immersion? Compare it with other modern first person games. Much of them are more smooth and immersiv. I think it feels hectic and not realistic. Are that mocap moves? Are that the final animations? Will speed be adapted ?

maybe cause its an alpha?

Thats clear yes I know, but how will it be improved? I thought they already made animations by motion capture? Need just the speed to be adjusted?

I doubt they’ve implemented the mocaped animations seeing how they just got their mocap equipment a little under a year ago. Also there’s really no reason to implement it yet, the alpha exists for us to test the core features of the game so don’t expect everything to be all nice and polished till beta.

that’s because the other games are wrong and ugly using hollywood choreographed animation. this game is using actual fighting techniques and stances. plus the animations are in alpha state, so they clearly haven’t been polished.

Hello @Arminius welcome to the community.

To start as your are clearly aware this is still alpha this is in fact the very first public build of the combat system, So some hiccups should be expected as optimizations have yet to be made (speed, fluidity, final touches).

One thing that is worth noting and you should consider is that the 0.4 update has some optimization issues that cause low FPS (damned butterflies!(there was some issue caused by particle effects)), even on some of the best rigs that its been tested on with the settings adjusted accordingly 35 - 40FPS was the best results people have been getting.

The low FPS can make the animations seem choppy or in some cases non-responsive.

How immersive or not immersive something will be is a subjective opinion, and is something that’s best addressed personally.

Did you play the BF3 public beta? it was horrid mess at times. If you compare the KC:D alpha to many other games alpha or betas you would see how much work the WH team has put into this.

0.5 update is soon upon us so we will see whats been brewing behind closed doors for the last 2-3 months now.

That is good to hear, thank you for the quick answers.

I think the animations in alpha are mocaped but not final. Mocap doesn’t automatically mean that animations are great. Little known fact is that character animations in Skyrim are mocaped (and they look horrible).

The sword fighting and animations would look a lot better with a third person perspective.

Yeah I think the animations are better with third person (enemy), but I think third person is not enough. It should be able to make the first person animations more fluently and less lagging. Maybe more visible and comprehensible what is doing Henry exactly. Maybe that is possible when the fov will be increased.

How we perform a move maybe isn’t the same like that we would perceive as such on a flatscreen. I hope it will be better in the final release.
