ARABIC numbers in the game/menus. What is your take?

I have noticed that arabic numerals are used in the sleeping menu and probably elsewhere in the game. What is your take on this? Wouldn’t it be a nice touch to have it in Roman numerals?

Here we go again. :relieved:

we’re in 1403 - im not sure but didnt they already have arabic numbers back then?

They did, afaik massive spreading of arabic numbers in Europe happened during 15th century, but they were already being used here and there since like 13th century.

It would be nice but then nobody coould read anything which agains isn’t that nice.

There is a thread on this? I couldn’t find it?

Well at least a few people might learn how ti read them.

It was not widespread, since Latin stayed as official language, especially in the Scholar circles (Including clergy). Plus Reneissamce was widesoread in Italy and Adriatic sea so the Ad Fontes latin (Reneissance latin, “at source”) advocated for use of Roman numerals.
However, arabic numerals were known as early as 9th century, they werent used however. Charlemagnes Palatine school (and scholars) did know about arabic numerals, but they advocated against it as arabs were enemies spreading “pagan sources”. Knowing the arabic numerals would bring interest in the arab (Mavarian) world, and so ancient texts like Plato, Aristotle etc would be availale to the public, and clergy would nit approve that (As they translated them to Arabic).
Watch/read Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco, this cultural phenomenon is greatly potrayed there.

I would love to see chinees numbers in the game

Umm, isn’t reading roman letters an elemental knowledge everyone has?

reading maybe. but for a multiplication one has to study maths. there are countless rules like “X increases the digits on the right by one letter” or subtraction rules like "the I after the V rescinds the I before the X"
what does it mean to have roman numerals for the look but everyone has to exchange them in his mind by arabic? they really made calculations harder and esp. traders and bookkeepers loved arabic numerals. in the context of such a game (where trade and counting and calculation plays a role) it makes sense in every case.

Actually the common folk did not kniw about arqbic numerals as much, maybe some highly educated merchants. They did not vhange the X and V to 10 and 5 in their mind they did not know about “10” and “5” in the shape we know it

you have to keep in mind that “before” arabic numerals there was no 5 to exchange with the V. there was only the V. now do higher maths ^^

What…? You do know that numbers are created by combination of numerals so XV / V =V…?

You have to realise they did not know of existance of arabic numerals… Heck it the plebs didnt even know of any numerals

maybe I got you wrong. I came to the topic years ago while programming and working with other counting systems just to find out that some really interfere calculation itsself. it was said there, that many ppl who had to work with numbers loved the arabic system…

You do realise lots changed since 2018 ans 1403…?

Idk how many days your year has, but this topic was made a day ago.

the thread is about roman numbers. i can only count to 10 in roman

I see, i just wasnt aware there are people having problem reading and counting in roman.
Just to avoid any misunderstanding - so you dont know what “XI” means? Or “XX”?

No, You learn that in school where you are? I basically only know Roman numbers from , e.g book-chapters and the clock.

Just for fun.
