Arena and Cuman fighting are different (in alpha 0.5)

It seems to me that fighting in the arena is way different than sword fighting the Cumans.

In the arena you seem to always (unless disoriented by being hit) face your opponent.
In the Cuman camp it seems that they can relatively easily slip past me and I need to constantly be careful to face 'em and not run past them when charging.

In the arena there are 6 attack zones, high, left, right, low left, low right, and center.
I never see the 5-point attack/defend star when fighting cumans. Instead I seem to need to face 'em with only the “center” attack and slash or stab away.

Is this because, I’ve yet to face a Cuman with a drawn sword (I always initiate the fight by sniping at them with archery and they respond by shooting back)?

or is there something else I should be doing?

Charging a cuman archer who has just loosed a shaft, with my sword out seems more effective at flose range than dealing with archery’s slow rate of fire. But it’s darn easy to over run them or have them dodge, leaving me wondering they the bugger has got to.

[/quote]Yes. You will only see the star and lock on if they have drawn their swords.

There’s three main ways to kill them.

  1. Have 0% visibility. Sneak up on them. Then 2-3 slashes to the legs, where they have no armor, and they will fall over dead.

  2. Shoot them. Side step as they shoot back. Repeat.

  3. Go in full armor and wait for them to draw their swords and fight like you would in the arena.

Which ever way you choose, try to kill one ASAP, then retreat until your stamina has recharged, and move in to fight the next one. Fighting 2v1 is very difficult because they chain juggle you.

Thanks Aradiel! That would explain it.

Yup, side stepping is important, stationary targets are too easy to hit.
