Axe/shield question

New guy here, had a couple questions.

From what I’ve garnered about combat, much like real life swords(outside of half sword techniques/stabbing between armor plates) are best against lightly or unarmored foes. Maces/blunt weapons are best against plate.

Where do axes stand in the game? Do they do a mix of sharp and blunt damage? The middle ground between swords and maces? Would they be a good go to weapon since you’ll be averagely effective against all targets?

Do shields do more then just slow you down and block arrows? If you have one as long as it’s not out of position is the left side strike zone blocked because your shield is there? Or if you’re not actively pressing it doesn’t do anything?

unrelaeted but further infos for axe/shieldtechnique here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUSMQOoFfn0

Very cool  sadly the only Hema experience I have is in long sword.

Only thing I know about axes is that if you’re good enough to hook the enemy shield you could tear it from their grasp if it was a punch shield. And they could potentially chop into a shield(I think?)

Holmgang Hamburg are total chads… Man how much I love this group!

You can do this even with a sword if you can

Lol I’ve got some videos to watch, but any comment on their usage in game :3

I know in beta axes were considered blunt weapons. I actually prefer them… But vavra and viktor only seem to talk about swords… I know that I called vavra out because he had never said the word axe in any video by warhorse. Now he’s said it at least once.
Axes had better damage but were slightly slower.

are you from ger? I had some practice sessions and trainings with them. Im very proud that charly interrupted our initial fight (“holmitest”) to get someone to film us   I even managed to hit him.
yeah man those good old days…

Comparable quality weapons in KCD are roughly like this:
Sword 5 pierce damage, 5 slash damage, 0.2 blunt damage
Mace 0.2 pierce damage, 0.5 slash damage, 6 blunt damage
Axe: 0.5 pierce damage, 2 slash damage, 3 blunt damage

So yeah, axes are somewhat in the middle, between swords and maces. Please not that these stats are completely arbitrary and differ based on skills, stats, and actual weapons (heavier axe might have better blunt damage, spiked mace better slash damage etc)

Why do people seem like the sword is the goto weapon for armored opponents? Why did they use them in armored combat?

Movies and tv, you see a guy with a sword one shot people in full plate or chain all the time.

Not that I’m an expert on weapons and armor. But it’s why I wanted to ask about axes, I’m glad it’s not just a blunt weapon too.

Hm. Kinda wish the axe did more damage but I’m gonna try it.

Do you know how shields work in game? What benefits do they provide other then arrow cover? Like I mentioned in the op, do you provide automatic blocking for the equipped side long as it’s not out of place? Or just arrow blocking?

Never leave @bones alone with your axe. It will need years of therapy afterwards.

Swords can be effective against armor if you aim for the gaps, or in the cause of a longsword, use half swording techniques. And you can always smash em with the pommel.

I just think there are more effective things to use than the sword. I feel like a mace or the back of an axe would be more efficient and powerful. I’m not saying dent the armor, but repeated strikes and the larger transfer of energy than a pommel imo would be much more effective. And loud. Imagine ears ringing…
I guess that they could be slower, and a pommel is faster. Idk to each his own…
I love axes. I AM AN AXEMAN

I forget what it’s called but I’m pretty sure there’s a technique where you hold the sword by the blade and strike with the guard like a mace, which is obviously good against armor. I could be wrong, but I think the sword is just the most versatile weapon which is why is often seen as superior
