Baptism by Fire is too impossible

I’m starting this quest later, i’m on the part where i have to scout their camp.

I’ve put in some decent play time, Strength level 10 and Sword level 9. Fire some tips at me if you’ve completed this quest and beaten the bandits and then runt. Cheers!

Look around try to find a dead Gaurd and pick up their Pike/Polearm that seems to work really well if you can use other NPCS as human shields

Until I found the hay stack it was pretty hopeless even with the arrows torched before. After that it was pretty easy, I just had to make sure to conserv health for the boss fight, so I was just slashing at the enemies backs that were occupied fighting others. Dunno what level I was at that time, but not super strong for sure.

This quest is definitely bugged. I take no damage, no friendlies die but i still get “too many of your men have died”.

Nothing to do with level/experience, it is a pure bug. Some people just get lucky and do not experience it.

Yes, definitely. Some say they can just hide behind men. Well, if I do that, too many die and I have to start over. But no matter what, there’s always this group that come right for me. It’s very frustrating definitely bugged and thus impossible. I have been trying for hours

Like the other person mentioned, it’s best to stay behind the pack and pick out archers with you bow or take them out with your sword. Do not rush to the front lines you’ll get overwhelmed. But since you’re experiencing so much problem, it may be bugged. Just let the quest go and continue if it fails too much, otherwise you’ll get frustrated and lose interest in the game all together.

This is amazing. I finally got to the part where I’d to kill Runt. But then my game crashed. I installed patch 1.03, and continued. I was happy to see my loads where still around, and when I loaded the file said Cuman Camp, but opening it, I was half in the new objective of finding Runt, and also back fighting the Cumans again. What’s more, the controls are completely bugged, and my character walks to the right by default.
Isn’t this game amazing? Now I have to go to work, but to be continued… sigh

Riiiiiiip Time to cry

Finally beat this last night myself. Leaving aside the crappy swordfighting mechanic on console, definitely set fire to the hay bail. If you get the opportunity before the battle, sneak into the camp (at the very back in the stable there’s a bottle of poison… use it), also if you can sneak around and set the barrels of arrows on fire it helps. Otherwise just set the haybail on fire.

Killing Runt I ended up one shot head-shotting him with an arrow, which surprised me being as I’d just spent the previous 5 hours trying to survive him… so I think I got a lucky roll of damage multipliers or something.

Keep your stamina up though - you can take arrows to the face with stamina, once you run out you start taking health though.

YASSSSSS I DID IT
I loaded an older save after I updated. And it seems like all the bugs are gone!!
It was almost unreal easy without those bugs, probably because I had 10+ hours of practicing, seriously without exaggeration. Now to kill Runt!

If you have the headbreaker Perk (dunno how it is called in the english version) you possible knock runt out. Then you can loot his stuff before you kill him!

This happened to me too. Wrotes to me, that i lose too much men. they are not fighting to me (nobody archers, cumans…)

I haven’t managed to one shot Runt with an arrow to the face yet… so I am kind of stuck here. The battle itself wasn’t much of an issue, but… having no opportunity to heal between the battle and the boss fight is just poor game design. It’s not “challenging”, just seriously annoying to have to do this fight on half health, or go back to an earlier save and do the whole battle over again.

My first playthrough I was so undertrained and saw this ,laughed, and thought “ wtf how can anyone do this?” My 2nd playthrough, I completely understand. When I did this on this playthrough my thoughts immediately were brought back to this pic. Lol

You do have the opportunity to heal with potion, as soon as the yellow swords crossed under the compas turn gray. You can do it between the Cuman camp and attacking the bandit camp. You can also heal right at the start of the duel vs runt, right before he rushes on you.

Restart the game :+1:

Yep, I healed myself right before the duel too

I did this last night, first go, I’m about Level 11, strength 13. I poisoned two pots in the Cuman bit of the camp, I did not burn the arrows or go into the upper stockade during the recon. I did not set fire to the pile of hay either.

We attacked across the narrow bridge, I could not get a bead on any enemies with my bow so just jabbed and slashed around the edge. when they told me to deal with the archers I tried to shoot them but I think I only hit one once, in the arm, but they came down the hill or ran away after a bit. Defending the battering ram was close as I was fighting 3 enemies at a time, and I was down to half health by the time we got through.

Despite having half health I defeated Runt fairly quickly with a couple of perfect blocks.

I will say it would have been useful to know that I could neither access my horse’s inventory nor drin any potion once it started, I had all the potions lined up for taking less damage etc but had to do without them in the end.

Thanks for the tip, it helped. I ran around like a headless chicken and eventually managed to shoot him in the eye.
