Bows and stealth

Perhaps so that it takes longer for the owner of the chest to notice that something’s wrong.

Hmm maybe but it honestly seems like a waste of time. You would want to get in and out of the owners house quickly and taking time to reset the lock could get you caught. Not to mention the owner would probably use that chest quite frequently so he would find out probably the next day.

Yeah, fair enough, but perhaps with that feature a few unexpected events may happen that will make it come in handy

Well locking doors behind could be useful, if a guard just stumbles into it they wont just open, or if you are trying to assassinate someone, and they wake up and call for guards, it will take them a while to either open the door or kick it down.

If it takes ~10 seconds to knock somebody out by restricting their blood flow in their neck, there’s no way I’d believe that it takes up to 120 seconds to knock somebody out when you completely destroy their blood flow in the neck.

Look it up. Everything ive been able to find points to around 120 seconds.

What resources are you looking at?

Everything I’m finding says that death occurs after 1-2 minutes, but they are unconscious after only several seconds.

from the first website I found on Google
"If the damage to the neck is severe enough the vagus nerve reflex happens and unconsciousness is almost instantaneous. "
“Assuming it’s done correctly (lacerates the carotid artery), the victim loses consciousness within 10 seconds - if not sooner. There is an immediate drop in blood pressure to the brain, which tends to cause fainting. Actual brain death takes about 2-5 minutes.”

second website I found on Google
"It is a gruesome thing to see. It takes 30 seconds to a minute till the blood loss /lack of oxygen eventually kills the person. Unconsciousness would have happened much sooner, but the heart will continue to pump squirting blood from the carotid until there is not enough to pump."

I just googled how long does it take to die after your throat is slit. Most sources i can find say unconsciousness in 20-30 seconds and death at 1-2 minutes.

So if we’re on topic, that means they could be making noise for 30 seconds after you slit their throat. So it’s probably not the best move if you’re sneaking through a castle.

I would imagine that cutting somebody’s carotid artery would have more or less the same effect as pinching it closed. If that’s true, we’re talking about ~10-20 seconds until unconsciousness.

But you’re right, even just several seconds would probably be like an eternity when the guy is struggling and making noise while you’re trying to sneak through a place really quietly.

Yep and if you hid the body other guards would still see the blood puddle and sound the alarm.

So maybe have some sort of leather blackjack or leather-wrapped club to knock people unconscious in a swift and bloodless manner? I’m not sure how effective or quiet that would be, though.

Yeah and if they had armor on i would imagine that would make a loud clang.

I suppose you could break the person’s neck, but I sort of doubt that a blacksmith would start out with such a skill set. Maybe if they find some sort of trainer later in the game?

I said it before and I’ll say it again- stealth decapitations with a longsword (if lightly armored). your pretty much screwed if the guy is in full plate though.

There is no such thing :confounded: …these two words should never be used in the same sentence together. Like ever

don’t see why not, a longsword can go pretty cleanly through a ribcage, no reason a spine and a little muscle should stop it. assuming there is no gorget in the way

It’s not so much the capability that I’m questioning… but more the practicality of it when attempting stealth.

A decapitation is in no way a quiet stealthy kill option.

Surely you’d be much better off using a knife or dagger to stab to the base of the skull at the back of the neck, the brain stem, or straight to the heart. All the while covering the mouth to suppress any noise and control the struggling opponent… but that’s just my take on it

Do you know how hard it is to make a quiet decapitation? I dont think its possible… And plus “sneaking” around with a longsword would get you noticed real fast.
The term stealth is very broad for most people… But I usually go by force recons motto which is get in, get out without harming anyone.
When stuff goes bad though and 90 percent of the time it does… Then a longsword could come in handy… Or an axe xD

a lot of stealth games rely on walking up behind someone and pressing a button to execute/knock out. really, there are more design options here. the little snippet war horse shows awhile back features creative use of distractions. the most realistic stealth would be in and out without anyone noticing. it’s only hollywood that has all the neck snapping, silent sniping, catching shell casings, and stupid things like that.
