Cannot proceed / complete Besmirched

I wouldn’t care, but since it looks like I could recruit Adam as an innkeeper and that the quests with Matthew and Fritz won’t proceed without this, it’s a problem. Spoilers for this quest below, obviously.

Rolling back to an old save isn’t an option at this point, as I’m probably fifteen hours from when this first happened.

So, here’s what happened: I got two purses, somehow, from the charcoal burner, one from yelling at him and one from raiding his things. I stole the cross from Andrew’s chest.

I returned the first purse to Adam and the quest just…stopped. I still have the optional objectives to give either Andrew or Adam the loot, and to return the cross to Adam, but no dialogue options pop up for anyone involved when I talk to them. Is there any way around this, even via console commands or something? I know I should’ve addressed this when it first happened, but at the time I didn’t realize other quests would rely on this to continue.

only 15? I’ve had to back up 30 2x due to various glitches/patch/ bug from a patch. and corruption. 15 is nothing.
Go back and do it correctly this time and save before the start of each quest.

That’s…not helpful and shouldn’t be acceptable. If that’s the only possible option for a bug that, as far as I can tell from the other results, has been around for six months, that’s just…sad.

some quests do have a certain order of things to be done and may have optional paths that change results due to the choices you make…
Taking a quest item out of order cor before a quests starts can mess up a quest. To correct, going back is usually the only option other than abandoning it.

This is pretty clearly a bug, not a suboptimal quest outcome.

Regardless, all I was asking is if anyone knew of a way to complete this quest despite this bug, since it’s been around since release. If the only answer is to reload before I completed the quest in a way that broke the quest, then…well, that’s my answer.

If you choose the option of having someone helping you, the quest won’t complete. I took both the bulging purse and stashed loot. But had no option to return the bulging purse. The question is simply bugged.

@Lt.Condition: You need to find Adam’s cross.

SPOILER ALERT
Andrew lied and he actually bought the cross to the charcoaler, it is in one of the very hard chests in his Inn’s cellar. Steal it, and bring it back to Adam and you’ll finish the quest. There are different ways this quest may go depending mainly in some dialog options, but this is what I did just yesterday and the quest ended succesfully.

I have the cross, as I said in the original post. tanushajerry is correct–choosing the dialogue option that you “had help” when talking to Adam the first time bugs the quest out. You simply get no option to return anything else after that point, and the quest won’t complete so you can move on down the quest chain.

I chose that dialog option and could return the cross after that. But I didn’t have it with me when that dialog took place, I got it later. Im not sure but I think that a new ‘give cross to Adam’ goal appeared when I stole the cross. Try to drop the cross and grab it again, maybe the ‘give cross to Adam’ goal will appear again allowing you to deliver it.
