Can't Pick Up Items

Maybe it’s because I am new to the alpha or maybe it’s a bug, but I can’t seem to have the option to pick up an item such as a apple or weapon off of the ground. Is this because I am not able to or is it a bug in the alpha?

You will not be able to pick up everything in the game, but more then in alpha. The problem is most likely, that it is not implementet yet, but maybe it is a bug. You only can pick up a few things right now.

I believe that it would be nice to be able to pickup almost anything in the game, even the pointless stuff, just for the sake of it. Because just knowing that you could, would sort of improve connection to the world I think… And I see it as a pretty cheap interaction to implement (creating inventory menu icons for each object). And it would generate some more thieve gameplay too.

Well, it is more complicated than that. Many items are part of the daily circle of NPCs

I have no doubt, but for some reason I though that your AI can deal with you messing with NPCs routines… Probably after I heard your example with the full pub situation (when NPC decides to do something else instead) I started to think that a Blacksmith would be looking for his stolen hammer too (or buying the new one eventually). But anyway I get that it would not be possible to have it that complex in a game… Parfect AI has not been even invented after all…

Yes, but the game would be uber-complex if we have to program a solution for every kind of interruption. So, if the NPC wants to eat something in the morning, he should find his bowl.
And this bowl is not interesting for the gameplay of the player at all.

But the player has to deal with hunger. It would be strange if the player can´t eat and drink the same things like the NPCs. I hope the pot over the fire is not only decoration. Eat from the pot/bowl is a must! And drinking in the tavern…

I totally understand. That is why I was so impressed with Viktors presentation about Artifficial Inteligence from GDS 2014. Seems that you have really went beyond the current AI standards we see in other open world games. He gave some nice quest examples where such a robust AI would allow some more options for solving the quests… I imagined that you are almost injecting quests into this ‘stand-alone’ alive world where NPCs could often react to a lot of situations using just AI. But it is obvious that we are not there yet. So you are pretty much scripting every situation which can happen in the quest? Anyway I know nothing about it so dont even bother explaining  I am just being too curious.

Sure, but he don´t have to take a bowl, put the soup into the bowl and go to a table to eat. It would be very difficult to design this in a reasonable way at all. What about eating from that pot directly?

Yes, it´s optional. But it would be very cool if there it the ability.
Maybe there is a little quest. Henry does someone a favor. The questgiver has no money, but says: Be my guest. Now Henry can eat and drink in the house like any NPC.
The animations are done for the NPC,… and Henry is only another NPC, mostly… :slightly_smiling:

I love the “little” things. Sitting down, make wood, make fire ect.
My favorite is Gothic 1/2. Wonderful immersion…
