Character appearance and adjustments

Hi,

I think I have read that the main hero’s appearance is set (and that is quite OK with me, as for example Gothic series was the same way), but I have also read that minor tweaks and changes should be possible ingame.

How will this be approached? Will a change of appearance (hair, facial hair) have any effects on NPCs and such? For example I like to play as a mighty, badass, full-bearded plate-wearing warrior with a big bad sword, but I imagine that a guy that looks this way could be for example taken as less suited and persuasive for a subtle diplomatic approach / political intrigues, while commanding more respect / taken as a tough guy who noone wants to mess with in open confrontations.

Will any of these features be possible or will any adjustments be more for like roleplaying purposes?

And what would others like to see in the game? :smiley:

I don’t know about hairstyle effect on NPCs, but other adjustments shall give you different possibilities for communication and so on. But I assume that we will see more info this Monday when they release another video blog, which should be about character customization.

I think they said the type of clothing you wear will have an effect on how NPCs react to you, but I can’t remember any details. Presumably we’ll hear about it tomorrow, as Omar said.

I think it will be as realistic as possible. Relating it to current day, if someone went into a more high class (or a place of nobility in the game) part of the city dressed as a peasant or more lower class then the most of the people (or NPC’s) would treat you as such. You could also swap that and a noble person without protection may be stolen from or beat up while in the slums of a town.

anyone with knowledge of the time period, did knights wear decorative devices on their helmets? like feathers, cloth bands, etc?

Even without the deeper gameplay effects I am always in support of customising your character. Im pretty sure knights did wear decoration on their armour as well as civilian clothes. To make sure friendly forces knew who they were and so enemy forces knew they were people of stature and should be captured rather than killed. Plus you look pimp.

Slight but notable change in appearance that affects gameplay would be great. It could work similarly to Fable where some haircuts/shave styles raised attractiveness and some bolstered scariness. It would be awesome if the main character actually grew a stubble over time and had to shave himself in front of the mirror, it would be fun minigame :wink:

The last update answers some questions about the character customization. Especially the clothing. I don’t remember any other game with possibility of washing clothes.

And if I compare just the small sample from the video it looks much more real than for example Skyrim town, where after initial awe (that it was better than lot of other games) everyone looked same.

Yeah, the latest update is more than awesome. They can generate basically any amount of differently looking actors. Too bad you cannot generate infinite amount of voice actors :slight_smile: Or can you? :slight_smile:
I guess with character customization like this growing a beard in “real time” or getting gray hair or getting battlescars is very possible, at least for modding later :wink:

In case there will be no mentioning about character´s appearance through game… Yea, I´d like to see at least some small possibilities of changes… fat/slim, pale/dark, or big/small nose etc…

I hope we will be able to change character’s face in the beginning of the game. Shepard from ME series had a voice but you could change his appearance (even his race which won’t be a problem in Kingdom Come).

Im pretty sure they have said the face itself is set but I could be wrong.

I do not recall anything about the character being set from the beginning, but remember, that there will not be 3d person view. You are going to see your character only during cutscenes. Although I think, that character customisation will be possible. Just because I don’t see why not.

They did, but I don’t really see reason why - it’s not like the character is based on something (Witcher).

From what I recall, I think that Your character’s appearance will be set from the beginning (looking like the guy in the video), but minor tweaks and options should be available ingame.
I am quite OK with the set look of the main hero (I think it is somewhat good for the story, because you can relate to the guy a bit more) and also remember that for example Mafia 1 & 2 also followed a set hero from the beginning.

When thinking for example about the Gothic series, I think that it was beneficial that the hero was set, I can remember him clearly even after the years (the quality of the story, especially in Gothic I and II helped with that I think), whereas if I had a whole lot of different options (like creating a black woman), I probably wouldn’t remember now. I don’t remember the appearance of my Skyrim hero as well for example (IMO Skyrim didn’t have such a strong story I could relate to as well).

So IMHO a well-scripted, strong emotional story (which I think Dan Vavra showed he can do pretty well) + set hero and apperance with minor possible ingame tweaks which others will react to = win.

I would like to grow an epic beard ingame and then scare people off with it :smiley:. I hope this won’t be a problem as Dan Vavra himself has an epic beard, so they should at least consider it :smile:.

Reaction from NPCs to the clothes you wear or your general looks? That would be amazing. The Gothic series did something similar: yo needed to get and wear certain pieces of clothing or jewelry in order to enter some places, and NPCs sometimes made comments about it. If you wear the armor of a rival faction, their merchants wouldn’t sell you items, etc. If you wore the robes of a magician, everyone would be nice to you and even gave you presents.

    2.I didn t like main character in Mafia II … simply I wouldn´t do what he did.
    I hope in KC there will be some decisions which drastically change gameplay(even to unplayable options(very hard)). So I hope I will feel like the hero, main charecter must be closed to me. F.e. L.A. Noire was a great piece game… but I hated my own character so I stopped playing it :-D. So… I hope KC will let me options(but if there will be story about f.e. chars big nose, then OK)

I am hoping for both. If there is an option to grow beard (which I really hope for and also that it is in some realistic way, not as in some games where You just click an “add beard” button), I can imagine that even if You have some expensive noble-looking silk clothes on, You might still look like a savage warrior instead of a subtle diplomat / nobleman if You keep the beard growing for the whole game. On the other hand, You might look less scary when fully shaven, even with armor on.

So I would hope that it won’t be that easy in the way that: “Ha, now I am a scary plate-wearing badass warrior with a giant beard” and in a matter of seconds after changing Your clothes to something fancy and then “OK, now I am ready to be a top-class diplomat negotiating an agreement.”

From the available information so far, I think there will be plenty of options. I kinda liked Mafia II in general, the story was not as good as in the first game, but still decent.

I would be OK with somewhat hating what the character does in terms of the story, as long as the story is really emotional and well-written as the first Mafia.

I think that will be the biggest challenge, to make a good and engaging story. I didn’t even bother to complete games like Skyrim, because the main story was crappy and the game became very easy once I grinded some blacksmithing resources and made some very strong equipment.
