Combat: backpedaling constantly

Anyone else just constantly back-pedalling when engaged in combat? 1v1 is mostly fine but 2 or more I find I am just on the backfoot the whole time trying to protect myself. I have no room to even try and pull of a combo, just have to keep moving backwards or else I get flanked.

In the beginning it is so, when then you acquire more skill with perfect blocks and ripostes and you learn how to quickly switch targets the backpedaling largely decreases. There are circumstances in which it will still be necessary, but much less than before.

I feel yah, that is how almost every battle with more than 2 people goes, especially if they are at my level of armor and skill.

The last thing you want is to get chain stunned so its back, back, back, until you can get a block, stagger then attack maybe once or twice, then repeat.

That’s pretty much what I have do, watching for the block and try to reposte or do a quick stab or slash, backup again, rinse and repeat.

Last night I attacked a Cuman camp near Uzhitz and I must of backtracked across an entire field trying to keep the enemy away from my flanks. Just feels very hard to go on the offensive or I am just rubbish.

Nah your not rubbish, this game does not lend itself to the head long hero run into battle scenario, at least not at my level (15). And even if you are more powerful than them three or four dudes pounding you can drain your stamina so fast the only choice is to run away.

Hell I run away all the time, just to get some distance then set up and wait for the first guy and hope I can get a slash or stab in before the other 2 flank me.

I’ve been trying to run away from some fights but couldn’t unlock/disengage for the life of me.

Funny as F*ck trying to fight more than one person.
I’m concentrating on the guy in front of me and some jack-ass off camera is kicking my ass.

with multiple opponents over 2, backpedaling like sonic is the norm. the reason is you’re constantly trying to keep them from circling you. i believe this is the result of camps sometimes having 5 or even 6+ people in it. when they finally implement companions, like some merc you can hire or maybe your friends or something you can recruit, i think this dilemma will mostly be solved. the other way is to just become really good, wear really good armor, and steamroll them with single strikes to their head, whack a moll style.

When a person comes at you with a blade, you can stand still and have him plow you down, you can psyc him out and run at him and probably knock your heads together, or you can dodge/backpedal and hope for a counter. It’s natural and normal for a defender to back up on an attacker to open himself for a counter (countering with a sword would be hard to do if you are chest to chest). Combat physics.

I use this mod.

It makes fighting multiple targets super easy as it doesn’t force you to ever lock on, you can if you want, but you don’t have to. I guess there is some sort of bug with not locking on to an NPC but I have never encountered it. The NPC’s bash the crap out of me and do all the special moves I cannot master.

People, do you know that you can disengage at will simply by pressing shift (on PC), the key for sprint, and re-target, do you? Then it seems to me that many of you that have problems don’t know how to use sprint correctly to knock-down people and re-engage. Especially if you have the Boar perk it makes fighting groups very straightforward. Sprint on light armored enemies, knock them down and focus on the high armored ones.

Then DON’T backpedal, strafe in a circle (backpedaling in a straight line makes you more susceptible to being flanked and forces you to keep going back for that not to happen). It’s not that difficult, and when you want to quickly change target simply press the sprint button to disengage and focus on another enemy.

As I said many of the “problems” people are facing are because they have yet to master to system.
