Combat system for a roguish player

Hello there.
This game got me quite interested and it’s very likely that I will buy it regardless of the gameplay mechanics that are still under development. The level of realism is commendable and worth the experience by itself.
However, from what I have seen, the combat system seems a bit slow when compared to other similar-styled games. All said and done, no matter how immersive a game is, if its mechanics are repetitive it gets boring after a while. While this happens in the majority of games out there, combat is usually fast paced and ends quickly so the player doesn’t have to endure several minutes repeatedly everytime an enemy shows up.
The trailers on this subject seem to indicate that the combat might get repetitive after a few encounters, and it worries me that the game’s mechanics might not support a rogue-style approach. Is dodging going to be present in the final version? Will it be possible to use environment elements to get an advantage in battle?
When i play games like this, in the first playthrough i tend to play as bow and dagger wielding rogue with an array of poisons to get an edge over my enemies.
Can you elaborate if this non-conventional approach to combat is going to be available for the players?
Best regards and keep up the good work

You will be able to use daggers(possibly in beta but haven’t found one) and bows (already in beta) in the final cut of the game, and you can dodge in the current version.

Sneaking is also in the game, but I could not figure out how to backstab someone while sneaking up on them. We lack any instructions from developers, there is no manual, and help is not too helpful

You can’t backstab, but you do get bonus damage for rear attacks. You can sneak up on someone, and choke them out. I don’t think you can currently one shot kill someone that is sleeping/unconscious, but they have mentioned takedowns as a future option.

Once someone is unconscious, you can carry them somewhere to kill them, or not kill them if you prefer. Once they’re on the floor you have to hit them repeatedly to kill them.

One thing I didn’t like was that once you knock someone out or kill them, even if no one saw anything, you still lose rep.

How do you choke them? what button is it?

You press C to crouch, then get behind them, then press F. It won’t work if you aren’t behind them, crouching, and close enough to see the prompt.

Thanks for this, I snuck up on the guy in the mine shaft and just started stabbing him, this might be easier!

Knocking out is in the moment not useful. Time is to short(he is benumbed) and you can´t unarm the NPC.
Hope for improvement.

there is a combo that says “it will disarm or damage arming hand”, don’t know if that works though

Never managed to do this combo, but it does sound interesting

It would be nice if one stab would be enogh to kill your opponent. It would nearly are not possible to block this stab. The disadvantage is that you have to dodge attacks because blocking hits with a dagger is
nearly immpossible. Further you have to come very close to your enemy to make a succesfull stab. Takedowns and finish moves should be there also.

[/quote]There’s plenty of uses for it. When the four guys come at you while looking for Timmy, you can kill them all one at a time as they walk single file through the most scenic route to Samopesh. Taking on all four at once is a lot more difficult.

If you want to clear out the Cuman and bandit camp, then again, it becomes useful as you clear them out one at a time. No risk of running out of stamina and them running away to alert the entire camp.

Maybe you admire someone’s items, and don’t want to damage them. If you kill them while they’re unconscious, then you can avoid damaging the item you want to keep.

I you want to play unrealistic ninja style with poison and daggers fencing agains swords, I don’t think this is the game for you…

Daggers could still have their uses, for a diplomat for example. They are quick to pull out and hard to block. Under the right circumstances they’re better than swords.

I just cleared out the entire Cuman and bandit camp 100% solo. There’s a use for rogue play. It’s even part of the game. Since the camp is free of enemies, it would mean we need fewer forces to win the final battle of the beta. In the full game, if you take troops from one location, you weaken it and open it up to attack. In the alpha, Kolben’s Estate is burned. Since we didn’t need to leave it undefended, it can stay up.

So, for those that think Henry can’t take on an entire army solo, you are wrong. I fought multiple opponents when I got caught, but most of the time I stealthily removed them one at a time. If I charged in from the front with just a sword and attempted to face them all at once I’d probably die from an arrow storm before I even hit a single one of them.

While ninjas are Japanese, there have always been thieves, assassins, spies, poisoners and other underhanded folk. Medieval Europe was no exception to this. In fact the entire premise of this game is based on a roguish act, the kidnapping of a king.

Ive been trying to clear that camp out but I always get caught sneaking up on the second or third guard. It’s frustrating because theres no stealth indicator and these guards have eagle eye vision. Can’t try anymore as the game crashes every time I load a save.

I went in at night. It made it a lot easier. Kill as many outside and alone as you can. Drop bodies where they can see them to lure more out. Then kite and keep moving if you do get caught. I had five melee on me at one point, and multiple archers. The funny thing was, they were shooting their friends in the back, so it made it easier for me. Once the archers ran out of arrows, they came for me too. By then, the melee were dead, and the archers were simple enough to take out. Fighting them on the bridge to the south is good too, because they can only really come at you one at a time.

If you put a horse on the bridge, it´s perfect.

The lack of wit of this answer tells me that you are that kind of player who likes to wear full plate and wield a warhammer or something like that. If this game fits your playstyle, good for you. But as a RPG, the role-playing aspect is important and it is beneficial for the developers to appeal to a class of players that favors some finesse.
Unrealistic you say? Maybe you don’t know that the most important assassinations through history were made with poisons and not some greatsword chopping heads off. Heck, the use of poisons has been documented since the times of the egyptian empire.
The combination of the cloak and daggers was taught in manuals of arms as old as 1500 as a viable fighting technique. Perhaps you think is realistic that a common peasant could get the coin to buy a longsword that wouldn’t break of the first contact with a breastplate.
Maybe it was not clear in the OP, but I addressed my question to the developers. My PC is quite old and I cannot test the beta version until some port to the PS4 is available. Please Anders, refrain from making comments like this that add nothing to the discussion and the only thing they accomplish is to drive people away from buying the game (which I suspect is not the devs intention)

I used it, but in the camp it was buggie. I couldn´t move after knocking down, no matter if I carry the body or not.
He waked up, and I was beaten.
