Combos - Too difficult?

Am I just doing it horribly wrong or do combos need hard-working?
I go to combo training and get asked to do a top down slash, a slash to the right then a bottom left uppercut.
This seems almost impossible to pull off, other games give you the option of a light (medium) and heavy strike and you can chain combos with those whilst your character has an innate sense of where to strike, here combat is almost like a rhythm game except you’re getting killed and blocked whilst attempting said combos. It seems much easier to just grab my bow and headshot people with that.

It feels as if they’ve put a lot of work into the combat system but overthought it greatly. From what I’ve read it gets easier at higher levels but I’m assuming that is just due to higher damage output and not the ability to manage combo strikes like the one in the tutorial, which with a mouse and keyboard is fukken impossible. Four directions would be fine but two directions with very little “space” between them means that while trying to time things right you’ll end up hitting the bottom right zone or far left zone roughly a third of the time.

Honestly there isn’t too much point in an effort for combos. Game isn’t balanced very well right now. Enemies can be slain, with very good armour, with a single poke

I’ve only used halbschwert (halfsword) and the combo that Bernard teaches you, all the rest are either 1) too hard 2) too long and gives the opponent too many chances to master strike and fuck everything up.
But those two combos are quick and if you have an opponent that knows the basics of blocking then you’ll be able to pull them off quite easily.

It’s a pity to see a good game mechanic be useless. Since spells don’t exist why not allow us to equip combos instead, that way you just have to equip one or two of your favourite combos, activate them in combat and provided you time your strikes perfectly Henry uses his “swordsman’s sense” (a new perk) to move the sword to the right place provided you time the strikes perfectly.

It took me some time to train combos. I realised that:

First, timing is essential. You must finish your strike first and when the hit lands, quickly move mouse pointer to new direction and push attack button. IMPORTANT: Do not move your mouse pointer before each hit lands! This is what I’ve been doing wrong, and it took me about two hours to realise that.

Second, it doesn’t matter if your hit is blocked. Usually, for three-slash combo, your first two slashes are blocked, but when done correctly, the third slash is unblockable. Your combo can be interrupted by your enemy only with successful riposte or dodge.

I find the combos aren’t very responsive or there’s no consistency.

Sometimes i’ll pull off a great combo and other times it just doesn’t register or happens very slowly. Whereas the enemies seem to pull off quick 3-hit combos in a matter of seconds

The ai is obviously gonna be a lot more fluidic than you. If you learn the rhythm, you can land combos everytime very easily unless they riposte or dodge before it’s executed. But as you level, they start becoming obsolete since you pretty much turn into a god past level 10.

Combo are made very good you need to Master them and not just spam them every time Like a noob.

Yeah that’s fair enough but it’s the 4-hit combo’s which become pointless. You either kill them within the first 2 hits or it’s very rare you can land 4 clean hits without them Riposting or dodging

The 3-hit combo’s are fine but they still tend to dodge or riposte so it rarely comes off

4 hit combos can only be pulled off on high level enemies like camp leaders or bosses. That is if they don’t riposte or dodge or get hit directly since even they’re dropping in 2 hits now :frowning: but if you pull it off, it’s the most satisfying experience. The easiest 4 hit combo for me is drei wunder wrist.
