Current Kickstarters about Video Game Music

Hey guys,

usually I’m not doing advertisements, I seriously hate advertisements in forums. Still some of you know that I focus on music in games and I came across two campaigns, which sound very promising, depending on what you like. It would be a shame not to share them. Let me start with the first one:

Kai Rosenkranz is creating an album and an experience for his fans. He’s the composer of the Gothic 1-3 soundtracks and Risen 1 before taking a creative break for 5 years. Now he’s returning and as there are many RPG fans in this forum, I wouldn’t doubt that some Gothic fans might be around here. He’s a really nice guy and he’s offering a lot for his fans. It should be a feast for the ears. He’s also responding to nearly everyone, which you barely see nowadays in times of social media.

The next campaign is way more nerdy regarding game audio and I’m really eager to see this project getting more support:

This campaign is created by Karen Collins, who published a nice book called Game Sound, that’s really interesting to read if you’re interested in how it all started with the sounds technically and creatively and how interactive music differentiates from other linear media type of music. You barely find good literature on game audio or music for interactive media in general since most of them are referencing linear media like movies way too much and compare them with each other like they’re somewhat the same with minor exceptions. This was not the case with this book and therefore I pledged for some big amount for this campaign.

By now I can tell you that Karen got some really cool composers on the list. Although not everyone is revealed yet, I know that I’ll be missing lots of people on the list. The reason is the following:

“How many people we can interview will depend on how much money we can raise”

And I want way more composers in this documentary than you can imagine. Also when the Beep documentary gets a reality, you will see me in this documentary (don’t know if that sounds appealing for anyone). And don’t you think I get paid for that by Karen or Kai at all. I do it because of passion, not because of money and I want to raise awareness that we should take every chance we can get to interview composers and sound designers who started everything and pushed the technology and ideas forward. Also meeting the people whose music we love is a unique experience and I want to share that experience with you. I had my similar moment with Daniel already, but let me be honest: There’s only one certain composer I want to meet in my lifetime whose name I won’t tell you. But I can tell you that he was working in the same team with two guys mentioned in the list of week 2, but this certain composer is sadly not revealed yet.

Just to let you know: recent video game related documentaries sucked and I wouldn’t write all this if I weren’t in contact with Karen who thinks the same about those video game documentaries and wants to make a change to this. I want to learn something from this documentary that hasn’t appeared in any documentary yet. I don’t need facts told by some voiceover during 80% of the time, if I could instead just read some wikipedia articles which provide the same information. I want this first hand information from the creators themselves. Who knows how much time we/they have left until these people are no more.

I’m passionate about KCD, but I’m also passionate about the second project I mentioned here and everyone who pledges a certain amount gets even a chance to see full interviews that nobody else will ever get to see. I don’t know if there’s going to be a full interview of me, but even if it’s just a glimpse you won’t see or hear me talking nonsense when it comes to game audio. I have my critics about today’s video game music and I’m willing to share ideas I would like to see realized regarding the technology and its use.

And remember: Sharing is caring.
