Death, Respawn or what?

Death is inevitable, one way or another all of us are going to die at least once. What I wish to know is this your typical Reload at the last objective (Skyrim style) or is there some other sort of mechanic in place. I don’t know how this could be implemented but my thoughts are if you die it somehow affects gameplay. Perhaps a non story mode that when you die you become a different person. Just spit-balling. Perhaps wait for the modders to play with that.

On a off topic side note, I know real estate is not a thing but I hope some modders can apply this.

I would also like to say sorry if this is a duplicate, I scrolled for quite a while a didn’t find anything suiting. The titling also showed similar ones but didn’t fit in with mine.

as far as i know in Skyrim there is no respawn. You just have to play from last saved position.

That is what I was implying, I had the wrong word. Thank you for correcting me.

There isn’t respawn in Skyrim, it is autoloading. Respawn is used only by multiplayer games, AFAIK there is only one singleplayer rpg with respawn like mechanic. In that game player character is cursed, every time he died “corpse collectors” carries his body to “morgue” and he wake up with an amnesia.

I didn’t know that, that sounds pretty cool.

I digress, what I meant was reload and it has been corrected now, thank you though.

Yep, Planescape Torment has great death mechanics (as well as most other things) But in a realistic game you have to go with loading the last save.

@Perry ninjaed huh

@Trademark I know, it is literally a Dungeons and Dragons game

Also, I vaguely remember one FPS (maybe?) game in which death was sort of rewinded. When you got killed, the game rewinded back (and you could see all your actions backwards) to a checkpoint. Basically, it is just a fancier version of “load the last save” and it fits some sci-fi or modern settings and would not be very sutiable for a medieval game.

I like Skyrim’s way of doing it. Especially since it let’s you quickly save, (if you want to) go on a killing spree, and then load up the save.

You can see in the live stream that you wake up in a house where you were nursed by the millers daughter. This seems to be at the beginning of the story but could easily be a death/continue-mechanic. GTA has a similar approach where you continue from the nearest hospital. I personally don’t think it would serve immersion well. How often can you be nursed back to health after you were impaled, dismembered or crushed?

I would propose a revision to the usual checkpoint reload mechanics to smoothen the process: When you die you drop to the ground and fight for your life, like holding your guts in, trying to stop the bleeding or something that shows that death is a grim consequence (something that most games are missing). While you’re doing this the infamous bright light slowly overcomes your vision until it’s all white, this is technically the reloading screen. While the reloading process proceeds vision and sound slowly return until you pop into consciousness once more and you are at the last checkpoint. This should seem like you just had a fit of microsleep and you are suddenly fully aware again. I think that would be cool.
The white light isn’t religious by the way, it is believed that this has to do with the vision nerves shutting off or something.

They should make it that if you “die” (or for my point to work seriously wounded) you need to be found by an ally. You need to send a messenger pigeon (limited resource) to call for someone to come get you. Meanwhile to play a minigame to stay alive. People would naturally act cautiously before just running into battle because “dying” would be a process that you want to try to avoid.

Pigeons as one-up? Kinda cool  but also a little too complex. I think fighting for you live - like I also proposed - would already delay the reloading almost too much. It would be very tedious and annoying when having a hard time with a certain challenge.

And then just imagine this: I got my arm hacked off by an axe and my head smashed in by a morning star, but no problem for I still have one noble pigeon in my hind pocket - fly little buddy, save my life… oh and my arm and face if you please.

There could be a transitional screen during the reloading of a save, but let’s not complicate it with anything too unrealistic. You die, you come back from a save or checkpoint. That tends to work best. Maybe outside a large-scale battle it might have you awaken in some house after being tended to, but even then it might require making assumptions about location and timing during certain parts of the game.

Was mainly asking the guys at @warhorse but some good suggestions cropping up.

I think that is a fantastic idea!

Lol nice one. I would say to that, if you have been bashed in as you describe then yes you…are…dead. but say mortally wounded and reduced to staggering around. I guess it wouldn’t really work but I do want something more than, die, then miraculously come alive elsewhere. Btw yeah I like your idea as it’s different from what I just described.

Death should be what it is. final. nothing other than a savegame should save you from that. at least in a singleplayer game.

unconsciousness could be another case. it would be nice to see that implemented for blows to the head or near mortal wounds. with a chance to recover some time later to flee the battlefield.
in arma that worked very well. when you got wounded you could do nothing but call for a medic while still conscious and bleed to death with no help…

in multiplayer games that is clearly another case, but since KCD is not one, there is no need for a respawn or recover or whatever. at least not for now…

There was a for mod for Neverwinter Nights (made by Bioware folks) where you had to escape the Underworld after you had died … sadly, this being a realistic game, this is not an option.

While the ‘Underworld’ idea sounds fantastic as you said being a realistic game it wouldn’t fit at all…I agree that death should be final and you should restart at your last save point whenever/where ever that might have been!!!

You could make it like something like a bad dream you had. A premonition of sorts? Where you wake up, all sweaty, because in your nightmare, you died by x ways.
