DEVS - please tell us how to raise our skills?

Hi there,
trying to level Fencing skill, I start a fight in the training ring with medium opponent, he has short sword, I have short sword.
I’m using Squire character, with Fencing lvl=10
Looks like in a fight where I only parry I get minimal experience for fencing - I did 10 parry in a fight and got 3 experience points.
If I dodge only - I get slightly more. when I do both I get even more, but it’s not consistent.

Could you please tell us how to train what skill exactly?

thank you

Well just keep fighting… I was testing combos (you can see the list of them in character screen), and after about 8 fights against medium opponent I got lvl 11 in fencing

Your skills level dynamically by actively doing the activities that skill is governed by.

If you want to increase your sword skill fight often.

To increase Herbalist skill (alchemy) collect lots of herbs and make potions.

To increase speech skill do quests with speech checks, successful ones help increase your skill.

yes I understand that.
As I mentioned in my post, doing the actual fencing (parrying and swordplay) doesn’t give much XP. I’d like to know how to raise it exactly - is it dodging and parrying and counter-attacking? or just dodge+parry? or just parry in a particular way? Or could it combos? Or successfull fights vs. defeats?

I do not have the exact details on that, I am from my experiences under the impression that its successful parries and combos that are the most effective at increasing the skill.

Just spent 40 minutes parrying and dodging as diplomat vs trainer.
got 10% increase of fencing. It’s too slow comparing to defense and sword skills, not sure why

Make succesful parrys and dodges and combos. I found various skills were slowly going up while I was in the ring. After an hour of straight fighting though, I hadn’t gotten very far so the rate of leveling needs to be seriously adjusted.

Hence my question - tell us how it works.
For example I did alot of parry/dodge in the ring and got only 2% raise in Fencing.
Tried again doing only parry/dodge - got 12%. Why? What needs to be done to get good XP? Just saying “parry/dodge and you’ll get it” is not good enough.

I think it’s workig as “intended”, though the numbers of how fast they are supposed to level are off. At the present speed, it would take days of constant fighting, in real life, to make any meaningful difference.

This.

You level up major weapon stat (strength in case of most swords) with attacking. You level up your “weapon XY” skill by fighting: more exp is for combos, most is gained from kills. There should be a bonus for completing arena fight, but it’s not there yet, sorry. Fencing is a special skill, “universal combat efficiency”, levelled up while levelling any “weapon” skill. It is slower, but it levels up with every weapon: so while fighting with a sword you level up “weapon sword” skill and “fencing”, while fighting with an axe you level up “weapon axe” skill and “fencing” again etc. Defence gains XP for blocking and parries.

All of this is obviously quite slow as of now.
