I have a gambeson, chainmail, the best cuirass in the game, the second best bascinet in the game along with mail hood, and padded hood. I also have plate on my arms and legs along with gauntlets. Even so I cannot tell you how many times it has been penetrated by swords. The thing that is very weird is the armor under my plate armor is damaged severely, but my plate armor is usually in good condition despite the damage I have taken. Plate armor should be far more effective. It should be able to easily stop slashes from swords and stabs as well because under the armor I have chain mail, and padded armor. I would understand if I was being half sword ed or hit with a murder stroke but usually it is just a wild swing to my chest plate and it just goes right through. If I was being hit by a mace or a halberd I would understand why my armor is taking a beating but a sword should be doing next to nothing. I thought this game was supposed to be realistic.

Is it damaged or broken?
You may just have to level up your defence skill and I believe under mantaince there is a skill that decreases wear and tear of your attire by 15%
This is one of the things that puzzles me a bit, though I might go a bit further. Why would blunt attacks damage a gambeson or chain hauberk? Why do unarmed attacks destroy clothing (and even plate) so rapidly? Right now, even Kunesh in Skalitz can tear through all your clothing in a few hits, reducing durability to 0. It doesn’t make sense. Yes, warhammers would damage plate armor, and cause shock damage to whatever area it was hitting. It would not affect cloth armor, however, and nor would your average punch. With heavy blunt weapons (not clubs), the defender should take great care in blocking and parrying.
Swords, on the other hand, would have extreme difficulty in getting through plate, let alone a combination of plate, maille, and gambeson. For that, the user would usually have to get their opponent on the ground and stab them through a visor.

I wonder if this is a bit player-specific? No, I have no idea how it would be, but I’m seeing essentially none of what the OP or yourself are saying. I just restarted and this afternoon finished getting beat down to 50% health by Kunesh (first time I’ve lost that fight /shrug) and then getting the guys, fighting him again and taking a few hits. Then taking four unscripted arrows escaping Skalitz…and my clothing is still well above 50% (Edit: actually only the shirt is below 80%).
My first playthrough was as basically uberwarrior, with fully layered top-notch armour, and I’d come out of 5 on 1s with perhaps 10-20 damage to my armour, and usually only the plate.
I don’t know about the OP, but I gather you’ve been playing for a while now Prepper. Have you been seeing this the whole time?
