Dog Companion/Better Voiceovers

First of all I’d like to say that this game looks very very promising at the moment. Great job so far! And no doubt a lot of effort has been put in. I have some concerns or rather thoughts concerning the goals on the kickstarter page.

I feel the game requires extremely good voice acting to make it feel as authentic as possible. I understand it is a budget concern but was wondering if the dog companion goal and voiceovers could trade places? In my opinion the Voice overs take presedence over a dog and it’s quests. It is a huge part of the game and wouldn’t want it ruined because of bad voice acting.

anybody else feels this way?

Just voicing my concerns.

Best of luck!

I think your concerns are unnecessary. There will be opened a shop soon so more people could back the project. We will definitely hit 1,2kk stretch goal, although it probably won’t be in a few days, more likely weeks. Beside of that, I understand the 1,2kk stretch goal more like “we hire some famous actors”, which doesn’t mean the quality of voice acting somehow dramatically rise… You can hire unknown actors for quite reasonable price and yet get great performance…

Not to mention is WAY too late to ask for something like that…

Um, I don’t think it’s WAY too late. The Kickstarter ended a few days ago, haha.

I think the “dog companion” was something they thought of at the last minute. They added it late in the KS only as they realized they were going to need a new stretch goal. Personally, I think they were very tired and worn out when they got the idea. It seems a little silly compared to the rest of the project.

Many, many people in the KS comments section said the same thing as you, OP. You are not alone.

I didn’t know a month was “a few days ago”.

this isn’t multi million dollar big corporation like ubisoft or ea, dog companion is a very realistic and appreciable goal. also, unlike other companies, where gameplay consists of latest trends thrown together without thought or imagination(space+wizard+zombies+parkour), the game design was basically complete from the concept phase. so of course new stretch goals aren’t going to be huge changes.

Why switch the numbers on some of the stretch goals? As i see it it’s 100K for one 100K for the next and so. on.It’s not like they gonna use 1M on a dog companion, they’re only gonna use 100K. I also agree with Freix about the voice acting.

Was it? Wow, time flies! Still, I mean that it hasn’t been a year or anything like that. I’ll bet you any amount of money you want that they haven’t started creating this “dog companion” yet.

@213 “Latest trends” is exactly why I am not excited about having a pet companion in this game. Let’s see…

Fallout 3
Fallout New Vegas
Skyrim
Fable 2
Fable 3
Call of Duty: Ghosts
Torchlight 2
Dragon Age
Every freaking MMO

… I’m just tired of “pets.” I don’t mind it being in this game if some people want it, as long as (A) it’s optional, and (B) we don’t pretend that it’s “new” or “innovative.” It’s been done to death.

It will only affect the people who want a dog. Voice acting affects everyone who plays the game.

I dont think famous actors would increase the voice over quality this much. Low priced unknown actors could probably do the same job.
But like to have a dog companion if he acts like a real dog.
I think they will realise both cause the shop is not opened yet as @Freix mentioned and I think there will be many people backing this game through shop (like me) so they should raise more than enough money.
So no worries

I wouldn’t make that bet. I’m more inclined to bet that it HAS been created, or at least one of several versions.

I’m going to be that guy for a minute…Assassin’s Creed had some good voice over (in the original) it was a little repetitive in places (the only exception was that the main character Altair had an American Accent and this rather ruined the effect) . But having German and French Templars verbally abusing me their own dialect, and also telling their soldiers to keep their eyes out. It added alot to the game, even if there was a certain falsity in the words and way they were speaking. In the period we are talking about, I think German, French, Latin, Italian and Western Slavic (Czech) would be widely spoken especially because the Czech Region is like the Cross-roads of Europe where many cultures and languages mix.

Doing this would be amazing for immersion, but I could understand that it would be difficult but I think we have all bought into the Realism element, and I even as a British Citizen, resent having everyone speak English in Games. I like the escapism, and subtitles are perfectly acceptable in my view.

it depends on how much some of this game’s fans really want to see this stuff happen, I back Star Citizen and most of my extra cash will be going to that, how ever if some of the fans for this game are as into it as some SC fans, this game could also go well above its funding goles

Your idea of latest trends reminds me of the South Park game (except for parkour).

i would hope that the dog would be optional, i prefer going solo lol

No well-known actors doing voice-over please. This is a game trilogy; hiring well-known actors for all three parts would take away much of the budget (let alone lead to scheduling conflicts of the involved). I would like to be able to hear the same voices throughout the series. I also like the dog companion; it should match the role you choose (Great Dane or Irish Wolfhound for the knight, German Shepherd for the shadow-walker).

Unless the well known actors want to charge a reasonable fee…instead of the massive ones they normally get paid. Not that I’m against that it’s their career choice, but non-well known actors are vastly cheaper adding more budget for variety. Having 100 actors for the price of 10 popular ones. It also gives more people a chance to be heard and get their names out their meaning higher quality actors for the future and more diversity. Even though I love Patrick Stewart (Capt. Picard) I do tire of hearing his voice everywhere (in games/anime) since I actually know who he is it breaks immersion and I see a doll and can picture a ventriloquist behind him.

Regarding the voice overs, when we will be entering the Beta stage of the game, then you could try to send in your own submissions of a voice over of some character to the team and then they can decide if it fits better. You can help make a difference if you put yourself into the character. I actually know quite a few people who knows how to put themselves into a character and live out his concept and sound realistic.

Great! I didn’t mean to say that expensive actors make great voice actors, a lot of unknown people do a great job with voice acting im sure. After I saw the 1h long gamplay video, (which looked awsome btw) some thoughts came to mind about the dialogues. I realize that it will be changed since they said so, but I hope that they have both peasant speech and noble. The video itself everyone spoke so called “shakespearean” peasants and nobles alike. And the conversations seemed very false when peasants spoke as nobles, kind of dipped you out of the whole atmosphere. I just hope they have good script writers for the dialogs… this is most important i believe ^^ And have a variation between the status classes. Thnx and Keep up the good work!
