Duel simulator or Warfare Simulator?

Hey! I have had this question floating around in my head for the longest time since playing the Tech Alpha, I’m deeply impressed and love a lot of it but the combat has much to be desired as in the difference between making this more of a Peace time Dueling simulator then more of a Warfare simulator, and this has me concerned, no doubt the combat is unique and very well-done!

Obviously there will be warfare, which means large formations of troops of many types and which role can we take in these kinds of areas? Can we hold titles and lead our own forces?! Be a mercenary camp of close-bound brothers-in-arms!? Or maybe be or even lead bandits? And one that many still like, being a soldier deep in these battles, more in the thick of the action and less command?!

But the current combat system shows more of a dueling feature and less of an ability for group combat, shield walls, close proximity with multiple enemies, yeah you can switch targets but this can be excruciatingly complex with lots of enemies in close proximity, yeah when a formation breaks apart and gets stuck into combat things become more of a duel. BUT the system boasts no ability to freely swing your sword or sword/shield bashing and such which can be extremely problematic in group combat of med-large sorts!

Show your input on this subject PLEASE I browsed some of the forums and didn’t find much in this area if anything and thought “well damn! This is a major conflicting interest in my mind and I want something answered about it or inquired about what others may want!”

Do you want to be a lord? A soldier? a bandit!? Maybe you want to be a monarch!!! (my favorite of course!) How will these play into the game and WILL the combat system become more free-flowing and less dueling to inherit more group combat and will the AI work together and guide you to working together to make shield walls work or more! (yes mounted combat to those who love it and find seeing a wedge formation smacking into a line of troops to be amazing!)

yeah, you are right. Warfare is one of the most complex things in gaming, and its not easy to simulate the support between all the soldiers. This is not only the case here on mediaeval warfare, but also on modern ones.
Most of the times AI fails at combined arms…
In the end, dueling is the first step to get into a big battle. Warhorse is working on it right now, we will see how well they will doing it…

Yeah the complexity is a huge challenge for them especially with the graphics and such, large amounts of troops and keeping a decent frame rate will be troublesome as well as getting the AI to work properly, dueling was a bit of a challenge but it is nothing compared to making warfare work!

Good luck to warhorse, they have us backing them up and look forward to seeing their work!

Suggest you read a bit more about the game.
This is not mounted and blade where you can lead an army. You will not become the king.

Its early for me so I do not have time for proper response.

So in, short now you will not be leading troops or a party of companions (outside of quests). Combat against more then one enemy has yet to be implemented at all, the combat you have so far is the first public build that was only meant to give us a taste of what combat was to be like.

Free aim and attacking has been mentioned by Daniel Vávra himself (@Hellboy) as simply being not added yet, it will come in a later build.( I would leave a quote but I don’t have time if you go to his profile you can read through his posts specifically shouldn’t be more then a few months old).

As suggested by @ThomasAagaard, you should read more about the game I suggest the game overview on the main page and the FAQs here and on the Kickstarter campaign.

Overall we all need to limit our expectations as we playing something build by build there are many things to change and adjustments to be had.

I’m sure and i understand what both of you are saying, I quite understand what the game is going to be then, a reboot of skyrim and the elder scrolls series styled gameplay pretty much, questing, going about as a single or maybe companion-aided person just set in a medieval world, i get that, so apart from that there will be no dynamic “Campaign” type world about, and probably (just saying probably) no large scale battles outside of quests? I know it’s early to say about a lot of this but how the game is shaping up in my mind based on the gameplay and facts i have so far summed up, this is practically a historical-based skyrim

no large scale battles outside of quests?

From what I heard, each of the three Acts will have a major battle at its climax. You just go about to build up to that epic ending. There may or may not be smaller skirmishes you could join.

practically a historical-based skyrim

Except armor actually isn’t paper, weapons have an effect on things, the AI actually is competent enough to use tactics, and you’re not a walking god.

No its not a reboot of skyrim.

Sure the devs use skyrim as a way of explaining to the press, since the press cant be trusted to actually read about the game them self.

In skyrim you can play as both sexes and a number of different races. And there is no clear background for the character.

In this game we are to play a specific person, with a specific background…
Also the number of stupid genetic encounters like 90% of the stuff in Skyrim will be limited.

You are not going to attack 10+ enemies alone and win.

Ah, that’s a little disappointing, when i first saw this game i was expecting free path choosing to be and do what you want and make your own character and destiny in the world, not something pre-planned with a pre-planned character and story… I’m sure i will still love this game though

I think that this game really shouldn´t be compared to skyrim as much, it has very little similarities… It feels like comparing Mafia 1 and GTA - they are TPShooters, they have cars, but everybody who played them know how wildly different they actually are.
Witcher games are much more similar in concept to KDC imo, but to me it always seemed that closest relative to KDC could be Gothic 2, with it dense map, great immersive feeling of the world (uncontested to this day imo!), cool story, prescripted hero, fun crafting and stealing minigames, somewhat realistic combat for its time (you really couldn´t run into pack of wolfs or three enemies at the same time - atleast in the beginning), and really really memorable characters - I mean I dont remember anybody from skyrim except for Lydia - just because she was always blocking that fucking door, but I can´t forget about Milten, Lester, Diego, Xardas etc…

If KDC will be atleast half as good as Gothic 2, I am going to play it again and again, just like I played gothic back in the day

I agree that KCD wil be nothing like Skyrim. But i do get why they compare it to Skyrim, especially in intervieuws. Becouse people like Skyrim. And when they watch a intervieuw or a video about KDC and they hear “like Skyrim” alot they might think “hé, i liked Skyrim maybe i like this to”.

Sorry for bad English

You are certainly correct about this, Skyrim is probably one of the most known brands in gaming nowadays, especially thx to its modding community (gives us insight how very important modding support can be). Gothic is quite old game, lot of new gamers have no idea what it is, overseas gamers probably haven´t ever heard of it, and its brand is ruined by Gothic 4 (arcania bshit…).
But I still think that especially in CZ and in Germany it still has some very positive vibes, and there is definitely lot of similarities, so some there is some marketing potential to be used imo.

especially thx to its modding community

RELEASE THE GIANT CHICKENS AND TRAIN RAIN OF DEATH!!!

And don’t forget the Randy Savage dragons. :joy:

I really just think they should consider making this more free-willed playstyled game! I believe it would look and feel awesome and give competition to the notorious M&B: warband that so far has little actual competition to its type of playstyle and campaign and give near unlimited playability, i know this may not happen and the idea that KCD Is lacking in its full potential in what I see could become reality makes me very sad.

I mean really? a straightforward story with no branches of decision and questing in a free-roam world, crafting and such (cudos on the crafting system so far btw!) it all seems VERY set to be like skyrim in many or most ways of course without dragons, magic and such. SO yeah theres a lot of very refined reasons why this game is pretty much a different make on skyrim!

IT is very much like skyrim gameplaywise but it has defined character and the main story like the witcher. There will be a lot of branches (and i hope that more so than in skyrim) but you cannot change history.I normaly prefer bethesdas approach of total freedom, but if Dan manages to tell a good story again, I will be happy

One thing that it helps to remember is that this is the first game by Warhorse Studios. If KC:D goes well, it would make sense that they continue to make games - and it may make sense for them to make something like M&B. Heck, if they re-used assets from KC:D, i imagine (as a non-game programmer) it wouldn’t be terribly difficult to do. Its holding onto this hope (among other things) that makes me very happy.

Yeah that may make a really good expansion for KC:D to introduce to dabble in it before they make a full-retail game in the sense of a warband game, still sad they wont do it here, I guess I’ll take whatever they throw at me but hope for the future they consider making a really detailed and in-depth similarity to warband!
