Find Pious (Spoilers Abound)

Hi,

(This will spoil the quest for any who read on. Last warning)

First, I do want to applaud the devs with this quest - it was clearly worked on hard by the writers/game directors and it was a genuine brainteaser as to who was Pious. In hindsight, I saw a lot of clues that it was Antonious - from the fact it’s casually mentioned he’s the newest, to the dagger you find in his chest, to the notion that Jodak says: “Don’t involve yourself in the election like Antonious”… and when you talk to him about it, he blatenly lies. It all added up in hindsight.

Unfortunately, where this quest completely fell apart for me was in the bugs. In my first playthrough, I ran into these issues:

1.) I step one foot into the wrong place when I first started, got caught by the hallway monitor and instantly sent to 1 day in jail. Despite my speech check of 20 and the fact I should be able to say: “Oh, I’m sorry. This is my first day and I’m not sure where how to get to where I need to be”… just instantly thrown in jail for 1 day. Really set a bad tone for this quest.

… and then later on in the quest, after getting a lockpick, I’m robbing things left and right, get caught by a hallway monitor with litrally my hand in a lock chest. “You were not at prayers. That’s 1 strike. You were not where you were supposed to be… that’s 2 strikes. Now run along.”

… what?!

2.) There’s a quest to get a forbidden book of medicine for Nevis. Unfortunately, I was here earlier for the necromicon and took that one too. This would have been all well and good, but there’s no option to address this in game. You can’t say: “Uh… it’s not there…” or “Yeah, I um… might have borrowed it… awhile back. And sold it/stashed it” or “I’ve read that book before.” The quest is just plain broken if you accidentally grabbed that book at the same time as the Necromicon.

3.) I obviously must have also read the abbots book while here for the necromincon, for I suddenly and inexplicably have the dirt on everyone even though I’ll be damned if I remembered reading that book. This one is probably less of a bug and more of a QoL thing. It would probably have been better if it didn’t actually appear before this part in the game to facilitate a more fun/creative approach rather than just something I accidently read while sneaking around open-worlding.

4.) After being poisoned by Antonious, he comes clean and then I decide I’ll pretend to go along with him… only to knock him out in his sleep, haul his body out of the monastary, fast travel to Rattay (to turn him into Sir Radzig)… only to be stopped at the gate by the guard, demanding what I’m doing with that corpse. No option to turn him into Sir Radzig or the Bailiff… just “Agree with Imprisonment” or “Flee”. Now I have to apparently just kill this guy and disobey Radzig to progress the game because… I dunno… maybe I had to figure it out before he poisons me? Or maybe not even then.

Anyway, just thought I’d report these issues. Great idea, just unfortunately technical issues really kept me from enjoying this quest.

Before 1,4 you could just exit chat, go back in, and turn in the book, even if you got it well before hand. I do that every time anyway, because of the issues with getting caught. Before I even become a novice, I get the book, all the pages, lock pick every door, and even get the monastery keys.

Then when I become a novice, the first night, i go out to the chest in the courtyard, where they make you put all your stuff, and get the book and pages, as well as everything else back. Then I have the pages and book for the quests again.

As for taking him in, you cannot knock him out, unless you take him outside, put him down, wait for him to wake up, and talk to him to take him to Rattay. I find it easier to just go along with his plan to escape, and once outside, tell him I’m taking him in.

As for hints on who it is, I think they ruined it by having the bandit tell you Pious carried a special dagger with him, then as soon as you find the dagger, you know it’s him, even without the other clues.

Ah, I completely forgot about this. Yeah, that would have simplified matters.

And thanks - I was able to get the book by going back to the chest and recovering my supplies. I’ll try to go along with his plan, then take him in.

No problem, glad I could help. I have played through 4 times now, and at least a dozen times part way through, before I had to restart due to bugs lol. I have done some of the quests as many as 16 times, so I have found quick ways to get through them lol.

Actually, anytime you have to do the monastery part, if you just want to do what is needed for the main quest, and not do the side quests, just get out of there, there is a fast way.

Before becoming a novice, wait outside until 2 am. Enter the monastery via the overseers room. It is all open doors, nothing to pick. Grab the map on the bedside table in the abbots room (no one will be in the bed). In the priors study there is a chest with the key to the forbidden books, if you haven’t done the quest for the apothecary to get the book, grab the key. Go through the study to the priors room, knock him out (he should be in bed) and take his keys. Go into the library (next room) and grab the book for the apothecary.

Then sneak out and lock pick the courtyard door. You will have the key, but lock pick it anyway, so once your stuff is in the courtyard chest, and you don’t have the key for a bit, you can still get out the door.

Now go and get yourself in as a novice. Right away talk to Pious, and tell him why you are there. The first meal he will poison you. Tell him you will go along with his plan. The first night, go down and add blood to the list like he wants. Then back to bed, and skip time until 4 am, go to mass, and then just skip your way through the day, just going to the places you have to. Sleep through night 2. The blood will now be in the kitchen, but the circators for me always seem to stay in the dinning area. I just skip my way through a second day, and go down at night and get the blood, so I don’t have to worry about getting caught. Then I go out, and get my stuff from the chest, which includes the key, and back to bed.

In the morning, catch pious right as he wakes up, or right after mass, and tell him you have everything. He will tell you to meet him after evening mass. Skip your way through the day, meet with him, go through the cut scene, follow him out, and arrest him. Quest is done.

On rare occasions, the game bugs and doors you unlocked before get locked again, and you have to pick them again. If this happens, you can get a free lock pick in the monastery, it is on the back side of the alter in the church. That way you can get out to your stuff still.

You can also find a door key in last storage room behind the kitchen…
There are places( the toilet) in the monastary where you can get access to your horse/bags(always have some lockpicks in the bags)…
The fastest way should be to lockpick the monastary, kill Pious with an arrow(poisen/bane) till the mess and run…
Another funny try (worked in Version 1.25):
Get in as a novice. Attack Pious, he runs away… sometimes he opens a door and leaves the monastary(he has a key!). You follow him and kill him outside…(Guards can be a problem…)

Hahaha didn’t know about the toilet one. that is too funny. Now I have to try that as soon as they fix the Pestilence bug and i can continue the story.

I’ll have to try attacking him on my next play through.
