Fundamental Flaw?

Hi,

I love the game and the idea of the game therefore i have been a kickstarter backer since the start. However the more i play the alpha the more i am thinking this game will not be a success. In my opinion, when people who havnt followed the development of this game look to buy it, they will be looking for a medieval England; knights of the round table called Arthur, Barons called Warwick or Lancaster, fair damsels such as Guinevere and towns such as Kingsbridge.

I dont think they will connect with the Central/Eastern European theme that the game has with characters such as Miroslav or towns such as Samopesh.

I know that not all medieval history is English but for a large population in Europe and mostly North America, this is what they will be expecting and find easier to connect with and feel part of.

I agree that it might be a problem…
But that just prove that the population in the UK and US need to read more…

You are right and I think wrong at once. People like things they know and English medieval time was presented to people more often. But large population of Europe is familiar not only with English history. France and Holy Roman Empire aren’t unfamiliar. Also I think that people like to learn new things and large part of fanbase is German, and they have lot in common with the story that takes place inside lands of Holy Roman Empire and regards its Emperor.

I am not so sure. Look at the Witcher - while being a fantasy it also had medieval and slavic themes and people didn’t feel disconnected. I think that KC:D fits the same vein as the Witcher: it’s both medieval and slavic (and it’s the same group of Slavic people as Poles). To make it even more interesting the author of the Witcher (Sapkowski) did a series of books called The Hussite Trilogy, so it’s roughly the same time frame.

Good point Holy, but I think it’s fine when fantasy comes in to play as ‘Vampire’ stories are very much from that region. Without the fantasy aspect I’m not so sure.
Plus I don’t think people will buy the game wanting to be educated in history, I think they will want to play what they already know.
Don’t get me wrong, I want it to be a huge success and I’d love to be proven wrong

Well, there is something else to think about too - while some people might be attracted to certain settings (fantasy, for example) I think an important factor is the genre. The fact that KC:D is an RPG is going to catch some eyes, especially of those who are into RPGs and people who like medieval/melee combat in general.

That’s how I got interested about the game. It has a promising melee combat system (unique when compared to the mainstream) and it sounds like a good RPG. These two are what matters to me the most. The setting (historically accurate Bohemia 1403 AD) is just a bonus. A nice bonus (because I like medievalistic settings in general), but nothing major or deal-breaking.

Nah, I don’t think it’ll be a problem.

Just kidding, Medieval/Realistic/RPG will be great enough !
