Future DLC being considered? Or too early to tell?

I know you are working hard to deliver ACT i, ii & iii, and you want to retain a focus on delivering this. But have you given some thought, in light of the massive response from the community to your kickstarter, to the future of this Game / Franchise? Could you see DLC’s adding to the game world, e.g more area’s, new maps, new weapons and new quest packs (much like others like Mass effect?). Or is this simply too far ahead at this time to be considered?

I don’t like the major idea of DLCs - just trying to suck more money from customers for content, that could actually be in the game itself. We will (hopefully) have mods for additional content.

I don’t think that they’ll make DLC’s, because the game is already divided into several acts. Every act will be released about 9 months after the last one, so I don’t think they’ll have time to make DLC’s.

The game is 2 years from being released… and you guys start talking about DLC? waaat…

Act II and III aren’t DLC ?

Not really WAKKO, you cannot just “Shoehorn” in MODS, if you conceive of this early on, you can ensure that Modding is easier with Knowledge Bases, script libraries, User tools, and other elements which makes life much easier for your Community of Modders. (ARMA is a good example of how to do this).

The key to this is whether you are going “Closed loop” e.g DLC, or “Open Garden” architecture where you allow and support MODDERS to produce 3rd party mods. Obviously Intellectual property rights and others need to be ironed out, but it is key to make a decision early if you want to save yourself having to redo work, or go back and produce documentation for your user base.

Thought and consideration now, can stop heartache and cost at the far end of the process, planning 2 years ahead in software terms is not that far ahead at all in terms of Sprint’s, scrums etc, when you take out Testing, UAT, Regression, et al.

DLC…

I feel like there isn’t really a need for DLC. With the way the game is being released in three acts, i’m assuming that Acts II and III will also include DLC-type elements in them, as well as furthering the storyline.

mod friendly games usually don’t have paid-dlcs, so i expect none. and there’s no such thing as dlc-type elements. just dlc and expansion packs. act 2 and 3 are expansion packs.

in the old days before consoles become super popular, dlcs were included in patches for free. maybe that will happen again.

Where do you draw the line between an expansion-pack and DLC?

I love the games from Paradox like Europa universalis.
Earlier they made expansion-packs. But when playing multiplayer everyone had to have the same packs.
Today the expansion-packs are DLC and you can play a mulitplayere game where only some use some DLC… and that is great.

What is not great, is when a game like Rome II get new stuff as DLC… but mods have already added them to the game, by simple edition some text files. (so it becomes clear that they removed things from the game, so they could later sell it as DLC)
Day 1 DLC should just be criminal.

Indeed its too early to start about DLC or expansions, but i would really like to see Spartans or Crusaders in it.

Spartans? I’m talking about late Renaissance, like 1600’s and stuff early matchlock/flintlock and very basic firearms, if you are talking Spartans you are talking Pre-Christianity. This would need a “Total Conversion Mod” as I don’t believe the Spartans ever lived in the Czech Republic in a Castle, you would need mainland greece modelled, things like 15ft long pikes and Phalanxes, the Spartans were formidable because they fought as a Unit not because they were individual “Uber Men” as many think they are, and I don’t think commanding 50man Phalanx’s is being supported in the Game engine or AI or scripting?

I don’t think it is is to early to talk about DLC or MOD support, etc. As I’ve previously said you cannot just “Shoehorn” in elements as an afterthought. Act I, II,III are already conceived at a high level if not in detail, they have already talked about adding further area’s to the world in these Acts. It’s not inconceivable to have expansion packs / DLC or even further Acts beyond the initial III.

sad, but true. I like DLC which can sometimes be free, but like in the game “State Of Decay” the only DLC they released was something that most gamers believe should have been in the first release. I don’t like that trend. However when there are things a developer wants to add after the initial game is made then sell it that’s fantastic. Another game which does this chop up game sales (and does it worse than any other game) THE SIMS!!! Yes the new sims has been worked on for a while now and you can pre-order it with a couple of expansion packs O_O! That’s right already working on expansions…they only need 50 of them sold at $20 a piece like that sims 3. and over half of them are things which should have simply been put into the vanilla game.

I don’t know about DLC’s, but they’ve already said they want to make trilogy of the franchise if the first game is succesful. It means KC: D (act 1+2+3) as one part of trilogy and then other two games KC:“something”. They want to tell a story about Hussite wars, which started right after the events of the KC: D.

DLC: ‘Pay $ 4,99 for a horse’ = No. Expansion: ‘Pay $ 39,99 for ± 25 hours of story/side quests & new content’ = Yes.

40 dollars? are you kidding? isn’t the base game around that price?

another person who never experienced expansion packs.

they’re 20-30 dollars.

Base game always is $/€ 50 for PC and $/€ 60 for console. Where i live and in neighbour countries it is that price in euros. The price for expansion packs is $/€ 40 for some $/€ 30 for the other, depends on how big an expansion is doesn’t it? I’ve experienced a lot of expansion packs and prices are different in Europe/USA. $ 20? To cheap for a big expansion, you get 10 hours of gameplay for that price which is good but not good enough for a big one.

If the expansion pack comes to console it will be € 40 on PC it wil be € 30 in Europe and in the USA $ 40 and $ 30 always has be and it will always be that way (I assume). The difference is that $ 40 is cheaper than € 40 ($ 40 = € 28). But here it stays 40 (€ 40 = $ 55) So i use the prices that i’am familiar with.

It also depends on where you buy it of course.

I don’t mind DLC like “new weapons, more armors” because it’s not important for the main game and i’m missing nothing. What i hate are story-driven DLCs, because everytime i have feeling they were ripped-off and sold later.

Golden times with expansions packs with real value, developed AFTER the main game depending how good was game received by the players.

If you mean “Expansion” with DLC ala pay >30€ for a huge update like in the old days - if the game is good: sure.

If you mean “DLC” with DLC ala pay ~1-15€ for pointless fuss like extra items, dog skins, a new village or snoop dogg voice overs - well you probably know my answer.
I hope KCD is not going to turn into one big milking barn.
