Game AI additions - Discussion

Hi Guys,

New to the forums and I gotta say, I’m liking the format!

After watching the new video on AI I thought I would add a couple of suggestions to try and help create this idea of a living world. That is in no way to say the AI and animation look bad! In fact it looks like it has the potential to be one of the best. Which is why I’m so keen to get in as much as possible.

Many of these are what could be described as ‘Idle’ or ‘subtle’ animations but may have a big effect on the overall feel of the world.

Social life - Too many games treat walking to and from a place as a static movement. Having couples hold hands or drunken friends embraced arms over each others shoulders makes for something a bit more personal.

If someone’s late for work or on an important errand, they should be running. If they’re running in the rain. They could slip to which someone may help them up.

Kids can run pulling each other along and parents can carry them on their shoulders (might make the whole, aggression thing to hard though). Talking about aggression…

Threats - It’s been mentioned that if you pull out your sword in a town/village. Someone will run and get the guards. However, I would like to see a little more interaction from the common NPC…

  • Couples should protect each other. Pull out a sword at someones wife and they will normally try to defend them. While a single person my just run.

  • Children should hide behind adults or run indoors

  • Others may run to the blacksmith to grab a sword and be a hero.

Conversations - We’ve not really seen much of how a character interacts with NPC’s in terms of conversations. However, these look more at the general chatter of the town.

  • Whispering. Something I’m surprised not more games do is animate two people whispering to each other. It saves any need for voice actors but adds to the feel of a town’s gossip.

  • Drunken singing. If Assassins creed IV showed us anything, it was that a good dose of NPC singing can make even the most mundane actions have a bit of passion. The tavern scene would of been that little bit better with a few of the men banging their tankards on the table and singing. Plus, a bard or two in town wouldn’t go a miss.

These are just a few of the things banging around in my head but I thought it would open up the chance for everyone to throw in their ideas and hopefully a few of them get into the game!

Further additions!

Animal NPC’s It may be overkill as animals really do play a small part in the game and the cost of animation/AI design isn’t cheap. However;

  • Animals should also interact with each other. For example, dogs could chase sheep who flock together. Chickens can chase dogs if they get to close to nests (I’ve seen it happen! Even I’ve run from an irate chicken!). Dogs should play together or be territorial.
  • Rats! I’ve not seen rats in any of the gameplay videos but these would of been common at the time and would scare children and kill chickens
  • Game which is hunted by NPC’s. Again, another main source of food during those times.

I agree with just about all of your suggestions.

The Witcher 2 did a good job creating living towns and villages with NPCs conversing, going about their labors, or taking shelter from the rain. I’d like to see a fusion between Skyrim/Oblivion and The Witcher of NPCs being fleshed out and able to have conversations on their own.

Regarding your ideas about drawing swords or a threat in town I completely agree. I think it’s a must that if the player decides to walk around with his blade unsheathed he will make the surrounding people nervous and potentially could get the attention of the guards. If there is some threat to a town or a farm I’d like to see NPCs that react differently based on their personalities; some will flee and some will try to stand and defend their homes.

I quite like the idea of say a farmer defending his stock (lively hood) if you were to kill a sheep or reporting you to the guards if he didn’t feel like attacking you.

Something I’d really like to see is if there is a bard in town, depending on his personality he may

  • Run away dropping the instrument
  • Keep singing but nervously
  • Start singing about what your planning to do with your sword, i.e change to a foreboding song about murder or evil.

I like the 3rd action as I would go up and tip that bard a handsome sum!

that last suggestion’s a a joke right. people seem to be forgetting this is a realistic game, not a cartoon game with cartoon characters

Depends on how bards are depicted in this game. In some places a bard would be a well dressed poet employed by nobles and/or societies. However, a street bard would be classed a vagabond and a nuisance. Known to stir trouble and incite mob mentality.

So imagine a disillusioned drunk on a corner who’s singing for daily bread who sees a fight brewing. He’d want to antagonise it for entertainment.

are you talking about a sword fight or a fist fight?

Either really.

A fist fight would make more sense in most situations. However, if you were to stroll into town and a vagabond saw your sword drawn (not up for attack, just held at your side) he’d most likely start saying/singing something about it. That in turn may alert the guards to something not being right.

It could even be we forget the ‘bard’ title and it would just be a vagabond shouting at you or about you to the rest of the town folk. Again, these are just ideas and I’m happy to say it’s a bad one if others don’t agree.

I agree with everything in this thread! Sparrow Hawk - your bard ideas are awesome! Hahaha! I would totally threaten bards on occasion if they behaved like that. 213 - loosen up a bit. There can’t be easter eggs or comic relief in a historical game?

I agree with 213 that a well dressed/presented bard as I originally made it appear to be, would in no way look to antagonise a man with sword. However, I’m really liking the idea of this disillusioned vagabond shouting abuse and slurs to try and stir up commotion!

Yeah, I am imagining a not-so-gifted bard down on his luck, and you kind of threaten him to shut up, and he just continues but starts singing about you and your sword pointed at him in a real nervous manner. I am kind of imagining the bards of Sir Robin in Monty Python’s Holy Grail:

That would be an awesome easter egg, if the bard replaced “Sir Robin” with himself, and sang about the ways Henry could hurt him. I’d actually tip him after that and he’d be successful and stuff.

This what of must of been what I was subconsciously basing the idea on all along!

Also wouldn’t mind something like this, though of course in a medieval setting and not a sci-fi setting

Would be an excellent reference to every nerds favorite cancelled sci-fi show.
“The hero of Bohemia, the man they call Henry”… hm… needs some working on.
