General Crashes

Hello guys.

After sets of tests i did last few days with KCD 1.4.1. This is generally targetted towards PC users.

  • I stabilized CPU voltage, while CPU is running at 42°C which is OK.
  • I re-checked graphic card temperatures and again its perfeclty OK - 52°C on graphical core.
  • Rechecked memory settings and again everything OK.

So how, game differs from all previous stress tests i performed?

First of all, KCD is a combined stress on all CPU cores and graphic card at the same time. There are few if any real applications with so high utilization

Therefore there are two hardware related cases when game can crash or system might reboot.
a) PSU is not giving enough power.
Be sure that your power supply has enough watts for both CPU and GPU. Some time ago i had 650watt PSU. System was working fine under load, but there was clearly a coil whine coming from CPU under heavly load. So i got 850watt PSU and issue fixed.

b) Power cascade which is delivering power to CPU is overheating.
Try to add some fan, or open case for a while. If it fixes, consider some changes to airflows.

c) Some other applications are crashing while playing game.
You either need some more power to RAM or Northbridge/uncore parts of CPU.
The above is true only in case you verified that GPU and CPU tested separately are not causing any crashes.

Hope this helps.

What are you on about?
The game crashes because there’s bugs within the latest update not because people’s hardware is malfunctioning.

Thats actually not completely true.

Game can make latent hardware issues to surface. Mainly during dialogues, cutscenes, minigames (dice or sharpening the swords).

Thanks for the advice Offler ! This game is also the most demanding I have seen due to the cryengine being pushed to its limits, and probably the easiest to break due to the great freedom that it allows (hence some bugs). Skyrim was not unlike it at its beginnnings.

On my side I found out that a slight gpu overclock working with every other game I own causes crashes with KCD due to overheating. The same is true with my default xmp profile.

As it has been said many times elsewhere and confirmed by WH, I would add that it is important to check whether the game runs better without any custom user.cfg that could have been created before 1.4.1.

Last, most often, when the game crashes at a precise point, reloading a previous save -sometimes an old one where some breaking event did not occur- helps a lot.

These are general thoughts though, and bugs can certainly be an issue too.

On other hand…

I definitely confirmed bug in Merhojed, when quest Pestilence starts, and you have to go to Straw’s house. Game crashes. Always… This thing has to be fixed.

I run MSI Afterburner in all games I play, and KCD isn’t that resource hungry.
CPU is around 50-80%, GPU around 80-100%, which ist completely normal for any Game with demanding graphics.
I have stable 60 FPS outside cities, just in some places there are drops to around 50.
Assassin’s Creed Origins for example shows the exact same resource usage and has not crashed a single time.

My temperatures (absolute maximum):
i5 8600k @60°C
GTX 970 @70°C

Not sure about newest versions of afterburner, but they used 1-2 threads for render. KCD appears to have different thread management.

Cant tell about AC Origins, dont have the game.
