Getting searched

So I was just searched by a guard, my stats were all high enough to have him not search me, but I had nothing stolen on me so I just let him do it. He said “What the fuck, all these things are stolen.” and then something about taking my “stolen” stuff from me, but my inventory was exactly the same afterwards (because obviously nothing was really stolen).

Tl;dr: They accuse you of stealing when you don’t have stolen stuff and say they’re taking it but they don’t take really take anything. So bugged interaction.

In truth, there are so many variables involved here that there’s very little to run on based on your post…

Do you know what ALL your reputations were at the time, within the city?

When you say “my stats were all high enough to have him not search me…”…what are you referring to? Your speech skills being higher than his?

It was in Rattay, and all reputation stats there are above 90, 3 of them are even 100.
I meant that I had the speech, charisma and intimidation skill significantly higher than the guard, but I didn’t use them because I had no stolen items on me.

Has to due with your reputation actually.

If you went to loot a corpse and steal was the option over take it also impacts searches even if you took nothing

I had something similar where I tried to repair my armour and the merchant said they were stolen. They were stolen originally but the stolen mark had long since gone.

Perhaps the same happened with you. Either way definitely a bug.

I could be misunderstanding the system, but I didn’t think just because you had the higher number meant you automatically succeded…

From my experience the likelihood of being searched all had to do with the conspicuous stat…

I noticed if your really dirty and gear in bad condition guards are more likely to search you – however keeping your gear cleaned and repaired I’ve not had any issues.

I’ll have to do further testing, but I had low rep with soldiers in Rattay on my 2nd playthrough but maintained my gear better and I never get searched. But on my 1st play through I was honorable and had badly maintained dirty gear and got searched often.

AS soon as your conspicuous goes to upper 60s and 70s, the odds of them searching you increase greatly.

EDIT - I think things like Leather Chest Piece and dark gambeseon make you look like a scoundrel so they will search you more. Heavy Knightly armors seem to have less negative effect for conspicuous. Keeping your gear better maintained ALWAYS helps though.

@bamsmacked88 seems Logic, thank you  gotta remind this for my second, Less law-abident playthrough.

It doesn’t matter if I would have succeeded or not because I didn’t pick the option. Now another guard came to ask me and I just use my charisma to deal with him and it worked perfectly, no issue in that.

Well, I do have high conspicuousness, but I wear full plate and fancy things, but the issue isn’t that they searched me, the issue is that they said they took something but they didn’t take anything and I didn’t even have any stolen items.

I haven’t tested it yet, but maybe some coins are stolen? I have been told that i have stolen things too, and i know i had no stolen equipment on me or my horse. They search the horse too.

I had this as well, its the keys you have on you that don’t belong to you. You can’t remove them from the inventory

I’ll add my anecdotal observations to the pile and chime in agreement that: being a filthy scoundrel does seem to make them more prone to search you.

Edit: I just had this today.
I got stopped by a guard, had stolen items on my horse. Guard saw it, items were gone from the horse.
So apparently things you have on your horse can be seen by guards as well

A lot of people seem to be missing the point… this isn’t about why you get stopped, how to avoid it, how to get out of it, whether they take from your horse (they do) etc. … it’s about guards finding things on you when your inventory lists no stolen goods and doesn’t seem to change at all.

I can confirm what Nicky observed… what they’re actually taking from your inventory is stolen keys. The real bug here is that the game puts keys on your various keychains (door, chest etc.) but doesn’t differentiate between which ones are or are not flagged as stolen, AND the game does not give you the option to either drop or deposit these keys in a chest.

Since I had 4 door keys before my search, and the guard took me down to 3 keys, and you really only ever get keys by stealing them, it stands to reason that the stolen flag does eventually age out. But you won’t have any idea when that happens.
