Hold ups on the road are a little annoying

Several times I stopped for hold ups while fast traveling, when the game loads 4 or 5 cuman soldiers start chasing me and eventually kill me. It would be nice to see a differentiation between enemy military patrols and a hold up with a couple bandits. In real life you would be able to see the difference from a distance.

Held up with holds ups.

Yes- I live in a land famous for bushranging.
I imagine being held up would be an annoyance.

Anyone got anything to chime in about random encounter variability?

GOOD, more Cumans to kill!
Don’t forget the bandits!

I sometime just stand off after dismounting and take out a few with my Capon modded bow ( admittedly with a dot and no weaving mod)
Then move in with my poisoned weapon.
BTW, if one of them has a pole arm; get on top of him and stay on top.
He can’t use his weapon effectively then.
After Bagging 60 Cumans they learn to fear me( an auto perk).

I dont fast travell so I cant comply. I think there is a perk called “Scout” or simillar that allows to detect such ambushes in advance. But no personal experience.

If I’m remembering correctly it’s not an ambush, its something like a “hold up on the road”, when the game loads it says hang back and wait for the right moment to intervene. So I hop off the horse as soon as I do the Cuman soldiers turn toward me to attack. When I read hold up I think of a couple lower level bandits, not a squad of armed soldiers.

Thats supposed to be the exciting part.
Not knowing what you will encounter.
You will see bandits vs cumans and bandits vs guards or bandits vs bandits.

In any case a cuman and or bandit will direct theri attention to you.

In the case of guards you can decide to help them.

Sometimes there will be traders who got robbed and guards intervened etc…

There are lots of variations.

Also, you are not forced to fight.
You can just as easily disengage and run away.
On ps4 its press and hold circle to stop locking on someone.
And then just run!!!
Live to fight another day.

At this point i am hunting the lands for any bandit or cuman i can find to apply swift and deadly justice.

Got robbed irl one time. Can tell you nothing pleasant…:joy::joy::joy:

See thats the thing, I can’t get away. Once I’m off the horse it’s over, try to run and they catch you, try to fight and they kill you, try to get back on the horse and they knock you down. I try to evade these hold ups but it fails and I’m forced to die, if I haven’t saved for an hour everything is gone. I’m just gonna charge through with my horse from now on and hope they don’t knock me over.

I love these encounters. Early on I may have died a time or two, but once you get up in levels you shouldn’t have much trouble.

ps: Don’t let archers have a straight shot at you. position enemies between you.
I have actually had them take out a guy or two ha ha.

Do you have the scout perks?
These 3 give you the ability to encounter them at a distance such that you can decide to prepare or leave the area.
Have you taken notice of your speed on foot? Your speed is listed in your specs in the lower right corner.
Wear heavy armor and weapons and you will notice that your speed will go down and the converse is true.
How close are you to your max weight limit?
From your statements it sounds like your Henry is still pretty low level. Perhaps wearing lighter gear will help you out pace a pursuit until such time thru skill and better gear you can stand up to them to either fight or flee successfully

I have seen online play thru where the presenter was able to out run pursuit long enough to call and mount their steed and get away. They were not in heavy armor and not over burdened.

Yea I’m level 7, wear heavy armor, carry weight is around 100. I have scout level 2, I just did the cuman camp mission, killed runt with 3 arrows to the head.

Than its just that.
Start training and levelling.

Find the stick up bandits who are often only wearing regular clothing to practice fighting.

The armor can weigh you down if your strength is still low. Try switching some.

Good luck

you did not say what platform you are on. If you are on PC and don’t mind mods might I suggest the robin hood mod. I contains a few helpful changes to combat and weight carry if this situation still perplexes you and you don’t wish to wait for normal progression. It won’t turn you immediately into a Terminator MKII but will help.

Pc, I started to add a couple optimization mods and a crosshair for the bow but I removed all of that. Playing vanilla so I can report bugs and what not.

Then all I can say is continue to avoid the situations until such time as your skill, strength, vitality and gear are up to the fight . Like level 11 and don’t forget to use Bain poison on your weapon and rage potions for tight spots.

I haven’t used any potions or poisons yet, too complicated and I don’t want to spend the time to learn it all. I’d rather focus on the story since this is my first playthrough.

To me, fast travel is nerfing. To fast travel without risk as a newbie is excessive nerfing for a game that intends to be a (quasi) realistic RPG

I used Oletha (sp?; runaway horse) all the time in the beginning to avoid being killed by stronger Cuman/bandits. Only reason I got Warhorse Jenda was that Oletha bolted during a fight (I was reckless and paid the price)

Then you are missing out a lot of the reason for the game.
Speeding thru a game like this is a dis service to the game and the player. IMHO.
Also you may miss something that might help in the next play thru as a heads up or show something important for the next play thru.
