HORSES! how will that be?

The mane of the horse is super ugly but I guess they will fix that…

I think a semi-automatic system for the horse would be nice (according to real horse behaviour).

that’s one of the most hilarious thing i’ve heard. unicorn cavalry

I hope that they will have the horses work similar to mount and blade as far as how you control speed/movement.

Using W/S as a throttle. Where you push w once to go up a gait, push s once to go down a gait. If you hold either, you go to the full speed (if you press and hold w) or quick stop (if you press and hold s).

That is about the most natural control scheme for horse riding in a game.

Then it’s just up to the animation department and nailing how horses move/look.

They mentioned mocap in the video, so if they get some good mocap work it might look quite amazing. If they can get any where near the quality of Red Dead Redemption as far as details go (IE muscles moving, etc) that will be awesome.

I just hope that they will give us the possibility to customize our horse more than in other games, such as different coat colors for all types of horses in game, bridle, saddle, caparison and horse armor.
For realism I hope that a good type of horse “f.ex. a Warhorse” will cost a bunch of money and that you can’t get one right of the start.

P.S. For skyrim they have chosen the right “type” of horses (no ponys), in the north lands the horses were smaller and “thicker” because of the weather conditions in the north.

On the game page under combat it talks about the horses.

“Horses are your primary means of transportation in our sprawling world, but you can fight from horseback, as well. War horses can be used as living weapons with special moves and attacks (strafing, running backwards, several different kicks, etc.). Horses also serve as a secondary inventory for the player. We’ll have three types of horses in-game (courser, destrier, rouncey), and each offers different abilities, stats, skills, and perks. Your steed levels up on its own throughout the journey, and even comes with five slots for armor and attachments.”

So they will have 3 types and they say “five slots for armor and attachments” so it will have some other customization than just armor. I just don’t think you’ll be able to customize the horses hair color.

I am curious about how the horses will behave, and how varied they would be within their archetypes. I’ve heard stories about mares being used as warhorses, over stallions, by certain groups, but I’ve never delved into research about this. I’m very excited about the updates so far, I’ve always felt horses were a bit lacking in most games.

Riding looks great already! And that landscape, can’t wait for alpha…

I like how they’re trying to make the horse somewhat independent. It would be awesome to ride a horse, which would react on the world around him as in real life - be scared of almost every obstacle counting piles of wood, mud and falling leafs

I really liked the animation for getting on your horse, well done to whom ever did that. In the video it said that, they will be having walk, trot and gallop. But in the video the gallop looks like a canter and is really slow when a horses gallop is like a flat out sprint with 4 beats. And a canter is slower like what was shown with 3 beats.Walk and trot looked pretty good though. But I think they just haven’t finished animating the gaits yet, so hopefully this will be changed when they do the motion capture stuff. I would really love to see them do horses really well as they are a HUGE part of medieval life. And my father has been training horses for 40 years so I also have a special interest in them.

It may have been mentioned already, but it would seem natural to tie how the horse behaves into a couple factors - the skill of the rider and the temperament/training level of the horse itself. It could be interesting to see a mechanic where someone has an easier time atop one horse while struggling a bit to make another do what he wants it to.

I don’t like how horse appear in this video.
If you look at 00:48 you’ll se something (for me) strange in front left horse’s leg.

I really hope that’s only a sample of horse model.
@TobiTobsen @warhorse

Horse is not ready jet! That’s the first horse model we had!
