As I said - prologue. Movements like that don’t just start up because of one man, there was bubbling long before it boiled over. Among much else there was great annoyance with the church for their opulence, trouble with Rome - Western Schism.
And of course the bubonic plague which left peasants both in a position of power and rattled their faith. Position of power in that it killed a great many people, but seed must still be planted, fields sown and so forth, so those that survived where in greater need. They could indeed demand greater pay because of simple market economics - which obviously the ruling class rather disliked.
