How I became a Knight Over Night

So I slayed some bandits, took their chain mail armor and donned it, and thus over night became a knight and the entire town knows me… Even the lords and nobles who were calling me a peasant (and still do in quest dialog) greet me as Knight Henry! Has anyone else experienced this other than myself? I was just curious if this was a bug, or working as intended.

Like I understand the logic that “back then simple folk didn’t have gear like that. So if you were ridding a horse around in chain mail with a sword then people would think you someone of importance.” However, mercenaries, as well as merchant guards, shop guards, caravan guards, and just someone who had the money and desire to buy such things would wear armor as well. So it wasn’t only a nobility/knightly thing. Was just less common among the “simple” folk. Heck the bandit I got my gear off wasn’t considered a knight was he? I doubt it. So yeah, just seems a little immersion breaking that by simply getting something better than cotton clothes, I am Sir Knight Henry known to all the realm for my… Chain mail shirt I guess.

Knock out a guard during the prologue, take his gear and you can be a knight within 2 minutes of the game starting. They still greet you as a knight even in Skalitz! On a side note: KO/kill one of the guards with a bow and you can get your revenge on those bastard Cumans that made you (and potentially Theresa) their bitch on your first playthrough.

You’re not a knight. You just wear heavy, good quality armour so people assume you are a knight. Quite a good concept imo. If someone walks around in a police uniform you’d probably assume they’re the police.

I figured it was because I was wearing armor that the “common folk” wouldn’t even be able to afford buying. The flaw though is that historically there were many people outside of knights who wore such armor. So armor does not make a knight, a knight is special status that would be granted by a queen, king, or lord.

Which also brings to light the flaw that Sir Bernard, Sir Hansus, and Sir Radzid greet you as “Good Knight.” Even though they would fully know you are not a knight, and would punish you for posing as one.

@Spiffington Also that is funny to know, I will have to give it a try on my next play through and give those Cumans a run for their money lol

well the commoners are idiots and you look like a knight…or more so then someone in ratty clothes. I think they should take your name out of the mouths of commoners who are not from Skallits or, maybe, Rattay. All other commoners should react to you but not know who you are until your renown has gone up in that town considerably. Kinda break realism when everyone across the whole map knows my by name and acts as though were family that hasnt seen each other in years.

Hey, do they not wake up and then come after you immediately?

I always assumed they would so I uh, killed them after I knocked them out. Now the 2 guys that greet you when you first go to see Radzig (they usually say something like “Is that Henry?”) aren’t there. There are no guards there, lol.

Well fuck, you’d think they’d hire some new guards eventually. They should make it so over the course of a few weeks or whatever in game time people respawn and if the town has people in in, in about a weeks time guards are replaced. I would hate to not be able to kill people but having a completely barren game world with the exception of a few main characters would kind of suck too

I’ll keep an eye on it to see if it changes, but so far, there are no guards at the entrance of Pirkstein (or whetevr its called) because usually it’s those two guys you get the crossguard from.

well they only say your name if you are in good standar with the town at least that how it is for me at first they just said how can i serve a knight like you and after i help the people in that town the dialog change to henry good to see you how can i serve a knight such as you.

but still it feels wrong because i am not a knight

Do you even become knighted? You’d figure you would at some point

We might be talking about different people. The guards I am referring to are named and from Skalitz and the very first time you encounter them again in Rattay (assuming you haven’t killed them like I did just to get the unique Skalitz surcoats) they say something about you being alive and asking why you’re there.

You can tell them that you lost Radzig’s sword but you will get it back and they say something like “Sure you will, Henry” in a way meant to be encouraging and not wanting to dampen your spirits, but that they know/feel this likely isn’t going to happen.

After that, they might just end up speaking to you like every other generic character.

I blasted through the story before the woke up and got away with it, -100 Skalitz rep though lol. Damn if I’d known they were those dudes on the gate I would totally have killed them all! Very nice bit of continuity.

It’s actually kind of strange because they still appear in the cutscene of the attack and try to encourage you to get inside the castle, lol. But then they’re dead after that.
