How much freezing/crashing is typical of Beta

I only just started playing the beta 2 days ago, and I’m experiencing a lot of freezing and kickouts … considerably more so than I’d expect for something in Beta.

I seem to be averaging around 3-4 freezes on startup (which most often end in a blank screen before the cinematic launches, necessitating a manual process halt & restart using the task manager, or less commonly a kickout to desktop), and I’m usually only able to play for an hour or two before the game spontaneously freezes on me or kicks me to desktop. I probably have a few more days of patience left in me (mostly because I really like the theme), but it’s almost unplayable for me.

Anyway, I was wondering if this is typical of what other beta players are experiencing.

My System: i5 8gb Win 7 w/GTX660 running 1280x720 at med res (approx 25-30 FPS).

More info upon request.

I get around 1 crash every 4 sessions, but this can be up to 4-8 hours per session depending on what I am doing. (MSI GTX 970, Gsync @1980x1080, i5 2400, 16GB, Win7.

Frequent crashes are often the result of a bad save file (and this can continue even if starting a new game or loading a different save). An alternative is a unfavourable custom settings file.

It seems to help both to remove the profile folder and let it be regenerated. I haven’t needed to do this very often. I think I removed all my save game files once since last March, and never tried custom graphics settings, always using the highest default (apart from a quick test to confirm that the lower default settings didn’t improve performance to a noticeable degree and made the image quality noticeably worse).

Getting stuck on quests because people stop responding or get stuck in doorways/behind trees is more common than crashes for me, but for the most part I can just retry a run through and get these working with a different order of quests (avoid the side quests if intending to complete the main with minimal issues and follow side quests in non-overlapping sequences seems to help (but may just be superstition…).

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately for me, the game appears to have completely crapped itself … the screen goes blank after the game logo splash page, and doesnt even reach the opening cinematic anymore, and if i have to delete all my progress and startover … especially on a beta this unplayable … I’m leaning towards simply uninstalling and asking for a refund.

Very disappointed.

I managed to find and delete the latest save files, which temporarily unstuck the game and let me play a few more hours, but now it’s crapped itself again. This is rapidly wearing thin … I’m not a big fan of having to dig around in the underwear of software and have to wipe it’s arse and hold it’s hands to get it to run, and even then not on all cylinders. Not good…

Well, after no less than another dozen freezes and kickouts, and repeated attempts to delete corrupted save files, I’m officially done with KCD … I was patient, and gave it a fair shake. A full 50 crashes is far and beyond the distance I’ve gone for any other program to date.

Love the concept, but this beta has earned a thumb’s down from me, for embarassingly and unambiguously poor stability.

FAIL.

… and naturally, the terms and conditions of the beta preclude a refund (I just checked).

I give up.

I’d suggest first posting a support request at the redmine page - http://support.kingdomcomerpg.com/ - with as much detail of your system including your dxdiag report and the crash log. There might be something that WH can suggest that will reduce the instability.

Second, while the T&C may well indicate “no refunds” this is typical for the protection of the company from excessive vulnerability. In practice warhorse have been refunding on request - at their discretion.

Your experience is very different from mine, and I can’t state any very good reason for that - though your graphics adaptor is low end which might be a problem. I will note that I tend to not install to program files, as the UAC messes with many real-time programs (and lots of productivity software too). It might be worth trying it installed to ‘some other’ location, mine is S:\Warhorse\KCD\ This is really a shot in the dark, but it has caused other unstable/non running software to function in the past and I tend to disfavour the UAC controlled folder for things I know I want to run. Experimentation can still occur within Program Files, but I have had more problems over the years using it than ignoring it. YMMV, and not without some slight risk, use with common sense.

@Lieste Thanks for bringing up the Support Page…best way to solve those issues…

Hello @Lieste did you get my PM yesterday? Just want to know if you got it.

I’m a former game designer, so I wanted to throw out an answer here (been lurking for years, but I’m not new to the forum).

Beta is simply an indication that the project has reached 0 bugs at some point. That doesn’t mean there weren’t any bugs, only that all bugs in the database had been addressed to that point. More bugs will be added, some of those bugs addressed will return from Q/A unresolved.

So there isn’t really a “typical” number of crashes in beta. It all depends on what the major areas of issue are. I don’t have beta access (will next week), but judging by the gameplay videos online, this is very much a late-beta game.
