How WH made mistakes and where they killed the immersion

  • Horse riders - I’ve gone up and down the map (never use quick travel) and never have I seen a man on the horse! Never seen the wagon as well, there are plenty parked around, but never seen one on the road. Put those in.

  • People you meet on the road should tell you what is going on in the cities they come from. There should be (optional) interaction.

  • you can’t talk to people while on a horse, seriously?

  • when you come to a new city, you need to walk around to find different shops, landmarks. It would be much more immersive (and logical) to simply ask somebody on the street. would also save a lot of time.

  • when coming into someone’s backyard, let’s say a mill, you need to walk around and find the person. I think when somebody unknown (or known) came to your backyard, you’d be the first to come and see what the person wants. Much more natural way to meet people than running around walking all over cabbage and nobody paying attention.

  • those mercenaries at the crossroads… that is really cheesy and not at all convincing. Maybe every once in a while you’d see a person on the crossroad (waitng for someone/something) but not a mercenary waiting for a duel. Get them off the crossroads and into taverns or whatever.

  • whenever I come to Sasau, I get out on the main street and from the second house on the left there’s a guy running away and one behind him yelling “thief, thief!!”. It was fun the first time, but now I just lean myself on the wall and stretch my fist as I know exactly when and where the thief will pass. And it doesn’t only happen in Sasau! After the first time, it becomes boring.

  • That knight looking for adventure is a cool addition, but boy was I disappointed seeing him the third and fourth time. Get rid of him, or update his story or something. Boring and killing immersion.

  • THose scripted bandits that rob the merchants on the road west of Merhojed… It was cool the first time, but seriously, every time I pass that road? Once is fine but later it gets boring and kills immersion.

-the horse. Isn’t it a fish? I swear it is a fish as I’ve never heard him make any noise. Besides, he must have some ABS as he is able to stop in place after galloping 100mp/h

  • most of the quests are go search that place. That is fine overall but isn’t there anyone who precisely knows anything?

That being said, after Mafia The City of Lost Haven, I haven’t had such an immersive experience. I haven’t had the need to stay away of the game so not ot finish it too soon. Hats off Mr Vavra, Dykujem je to uzasne nadherna hra! Thanks to all of the people at WH. I came upon the game on internet back in 2011 when there was a tiny post on the old website and followed and backed it as soon as it was possible.

KUTGW!

There’s two kind of knights I’ve met, one remembers that I’ve beaten him and offers to duel me again, the other is just happy I keep beating him…

i’m too affraid to get into fight since i’m such a pussy (in the game of course _D )
but let’s stay on the topic, what is killing your immersion in this game?

Hmm well, mostly Henry being an utter dick to nobility and basically not fearing for his life even once xD

  • The rain effect (looks really bad compared to the rest of the game)
  • The arrow trails (they just look terribly out of place in this game, unnecessary and ugly)
  • Not beeing able to interact with 90% of the items in the world
  • Out of stamina effect (why would my screen get blue? there are much better wayys to do this. Even just letting the screen get dark but BLUE? WHY?)
  • AI (both enemies and animals are sometimes terribly shortsighted)

To list only some of the most glaring things…

Despite all that the game is still very impressive and I absolutely love the level design.

Yea there was a cutscene where he talked shit to Capon or some other guy and I’m like dude, I would never have said that and I’m sure Henry wouldn’t either.

You, sir, are absolutely correct. I’m loving the game, but your ideas would improve a lot its realism. Also, i’d like to see some children playing (c’mon, farmers had 10-15 children back then!!) and maybe some cats.

ah indeed, children playing around. that should be expected. Although, I think they spent more time in the field helping their parents than playing around. hopefully they see this and make ammends as the game is great and needs only few touches to be The best game ever.

in one of his vids, Daniel mentioned that they couldn’t get all the horse stuff in (my words). that probably explains why no NPC horseriders. btw, Cuman were famous for horseback riding, and yet, none of their camps have horsemen NPCs.

there’s a balance in the scripted battles (guards vs bandits vs Cuman). the game is set in a time of war and pillaging. so one and done breaks that ‘immersion’

the rest would be nice and appreciated addons but not essential

kids? yeah, that’s a new model/asset group. having them would be nice. if at least some interacted with Henry in a meaningful way (quest/activity/dialog), it’d be a great addon. otherwise, they’d just be aesthetic fluff. akin to the butterflies that populate the KCD landscape

I’m quite sure that kids were there, historically speaking. lul. Even aesthetic would be good, it would improve a lot the whole realism imo.

agree.

haven’t seen anybody grouse about the ragdoll ‘fold in half’ falls to the ground after a kill shot. i can guarantee none of the actors/actresses that they 3D scanned fell to the ground like that.

indeed, if we talk about immersion, they should be there in the fields working their arses off so todays kids see how they are lucky.

Because it gets dark if you are tierd and you need sleep.

True that but as far as immersion goes, I am willing to trade folding dead people for pressing “E” and having Henry scream (from the horse) “God be with you master” when he enters the backyard calling for the master of the house instead of running around searching for him.

This game can be so immersive, that lot of things that I wouldn’t mind in other game really break immersion for me.
For example:

  • After you gain some reputation, suddenly everybody knows your name and acts like you are friends, even when you never seen them before.
On the other hand, some people who should be your friends (Theresa, Father Godwin) completely ignore you.

  • World doesn’t seem very alive. Like OP mentioned no wagons or carts no horse riders (they were in beta). No shepherds herding sheep, no roster crowing in the morning (like in this trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVZXU6Xs-x8). No fish in the river, no pigeons in pigeon lofts, nobody goes to bathhouses to take bath. No women doing laundry on the side of the river. People don’t go to church on Sundays (actually every day is the same).

  • Lords are wandering the streets by themselves and no one react to them, Sir Radzig doesn’t have his own tent and servants in military camp and eats and sleeps among common soldiers.

  • AI is not just buggy, but overall not very good, animal don’t react if there are arrows landing few centimetres before them. If you follow those three women to the forest In Dance with the Devil quest, you can go 2 meters behind them with the torch and they don’t react at all. And so many similar things

glad to see some great additions already. I’ll add one more.
-Church bells! They were fundamental in those times as not a lot of people had watches, certainly not in the countryside. Even in towns I’d expect to se a sun watch on facade of some buildings (not sure about that, maybe that came later than 1403).
However, A church bell should be heard in the city and around the walls. I understand the day is about 40 minutes long so each hour would be an overkill. but at least at dawn, noon, and dusk!

Yes, I am aware of these mods. I’m just baffled why those arrow trails are there in the first place they look horribly out of place.

It’s like putting ketchup on a tiramisu.

I would be ok with sir Radzig doesnt have his own tent. He lose almost everything in Skalitz so I think he is ok with sleeping with his soldiers. But I would like to see ppl to show respect to their lords.

Some good lists there and fairly reasonable too.
