Ideas about controlling the game (keyboard suggestions?)

Hello backers and fans of KCD!

While testing Alpha 0.1, 0.2 and 0.21 I realized, Dan Vavra said there will be unique system for playing this game.
So I’ve focused on alchemy mini-game and I must say it is very hard and confusing to control things with keyboard. To be more exact, I can’t see the unigueness in it. I hope this is only first preview of this controling system.

Maybe later there will be possibility to control hand by mouse or some more interactive and realistic system than using hotkeys.

What do you think about that? Do you have any suggestions? I want to be sure the won’t do similar mistakes in playability like in Gothic I and II :smile:

Every played the Surgeon Simulator?

If you can find me 1 Rpg with a more in depth/realistic/hands on crafting system ill agree with you.

I have yet to use the keyboard system in the alpha. using a gamepad works lovely I can whip up potions no problem.

@McWonderBeast
I would like to try it also with gamepad. What kind of gamepad do you have?

@YuusouAmazing
No but I saw a lot of videos :smiley: I think this is not the way how to control the game… :smile:

That’s why I created this topic. It would be nice to have some nice mechanics for those crafting systems.

PS3 controller. I port through Motion Joy so its registered as an Xbox controller.

Hello i don’t know if this was talked before, but all the videos that i saw (and don’t claim i saw all) from KCD show the developers playing the game with a gamepad, i don’t have anything against gamepads mind you, so calm your horses, but playing the Beta with M&K i’m noticing some controls that imo could be mapped to the Mouse and keyboard in other, imo better better ways, so i ask are the M&K controls still being optimized?

Now a explanation for this thread, i still didn’t played the game that much so i can only critic one control aspect…horse riding, yes i’m criticizing that, :stuck_out_tongue: , the horse control imo could be made simpler, what i recommend instead of steering the horse with A and D, would be if the horse followed the mouse direction (in the horizontal plain only of course), like as if you where pushing the reigns smoothly, and he would follow with his head, it would bring the control complexity down, cut the need to use so much keys (and fingers), free them, perhaps to do horse combate, cough :wink: …, and so make the act of riding them easy and enjoyable, a press once button to make the horse run (until tired) would also improve things imo, they are just a means of travel from place to place and so, the lesser tiresome you make it more the people will use it and so, imo take out the incentive to use fast travel so much improving immersion and making players not miss so much of this fantastic designed world.

I know this will seam like i’m asking to dumb-down the control, and in some sense i am, not because i hate complexity or i’m lazy, that is just not true, but because imo the game is complex enough (especially combate) and so making a simple act like riding a horse be unnecessarily contrived, is just bad design imo, if you can make it simple but still fun you should do it.

If I may bring up this topic, it would be great to be able to redefine keys as one likes. For instance, I would like a different layout for the stab and block commands.

The ability to remap keys will be implemented at some point.

I also noticed that when Henry is running on foot, all one must do to change direction is move the camera with the mouse and Henry follows right along. So, no “A” and “D” needed to turn right or left for Henry. But when Henry is mounted, moving the mouse lets you look around, but does not change the direction of the horse, and the “A” and “D” keys must be used to turn the horse.

This leads to two different methods of movement, and going from horse to foot and back to horse often finds me using the wrong controls. It would seem to be far better to have one way to control movement, and I feel the way Henry moves on foot is light years ahead of the “A” and “D” keys, as it allows one to turn smoothly, while key movement is simply a bunch of short, straight lines lacking any fluidity whatsoever.

To my opinion, this is realistic 'cause sitting on the horseback you can turn your head freely. I like the current way very much and this what many games like Skyrim lack for me: the ability to look around independent of the direction of movement, when on the horse.

What I really miss in the game is movement lock. I mean press-release and the horse is going, so you don’t have to hold the key.

most other steam games I have played recently detect the xbox 360 controller on the pc and provide the exactly the xbox interface with controller butons in the UI instead of keyboard. If I turn off the xbox controller (so it de-registers from the pc) and run the game again I get the pc/keyboard interface. It should be like this. Its good to see the xbox controller does work currently but the game should show a yellow “Y” button to mount horse rather than keyboard X.
